chester crusader motor/capacitor problem???
« on: September 30, 2014, 02:14:12 PM »
My Chester Crusader 230v lathe is having some issues!!

It starts up, runs fine, but occasionally, (maybe one time in ten/twenty), when stopping, it makes a "pop" noise.

It is a definite "pop", just as the motor stops.

I was told it was a run capacitor going bad, i changed this and the "pop" was still happening!

I traced the noise to the start capacitor, after popping the cover off and with it hanging free, i could see flashes from the top of the body, (where the wires enter).

Now, i'm not a sparky by trade, so i'm asking!!

What's the most likely cause?

Thank you

Jim

if i'd thought it through, i'd have never tried it

Either a loose connection or more likely flashing over due to the back emf from the motor slowing down ?
