Brass/Alu engraving; getting my feet wet
« on: December 08, 2014, 01:39:03 PM »
Well, it's been quite a long time since the last post, but finally I got a new project, which has been successful so far. Making lots of errors to get myself familiar again
to that learning curve -thing.

So, this time it's engraving, inspiration came from: http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/threads/46469-Get-a-grip-with-a-3D-pantograph!

I'm not ready (yet) to make a 3D engravings, but who knows, how far this project goes...

First thing was to gather materials to build the thing, didn't have an aluminum, or any other suitable metal stock at hand, so I made mahogany slabs for the arms:

Flanged bushings were made of brass, pins were turned of 8mm stainless steel.

For the pivot, I simplified the design even more; I used a 19mm(0.748") steel ball, from the ancient ball-mouse. Soft steel, easy to drill, and tap.

Enough tech talk for now. Instead some results.

First there was this:

Then some blobby testings on Alu:

When filled with an acrylic paint, looks bit smoother:

Then came this:

Sort of a jigsaw puzzle, a technique, that was easier than cut large pieces at once with a fret saw out of plywood.

And finally, I managed to make smoother mirrored version out of 3mm plastic(details later):

First decent engraving on Alu sheet:

Then brass, from different angles:

Looks a lot more rougher, than it's in real size.

This is Max who we sadly lost last year - we now have a four year old bitch and a one year old dog

Wow, that engraver is really cool!  Just the type of thing I like. And the engravings (and patterns) are really well done.

I'm not sure what scale those are and what speed and tool you are running. I've been running 1/8" solid carbide Amana bits at 6000 RPM in aluminum via CNC and they do a great job. But I'm not sure how well that would work on something you couldn't set a continuous feed rate for, like your engraver. Also maybe the tool is too large for your uses.

Anyway, I'm really impressed with the simplicity of the rig and the quality of the results.

Thanks! The size of that Johnny Cash -master is 160x100mm(6,3 x 3,4"), while the engraved one is ~23x14mm(0,9 x 0,55").
So the ratio is ~7.

Motor speed is about 4500 rpm at 24 volt. Cutting bit is made of 3,2mm(0,125") scrapped tungsten burr.

This end is used for filling...                               ...and this end for finishing:

Both ends have six faces, sharpened until there is no flat at the end.

At first I considered of getting commercial bits, but they might be too delicate for manual operation.

And the stylus:

Tip is made of 1mm drill bit. 0,5mm would be even better for superfine details, but also much more fragile.
