Bargin from the scrapman
« on: April 04, 2015, 10:10:04 AM »
I got a linisher for £10 from the scrapman 3 phase 3\4hp , pulled it apart and rewired the motor to single phase capasitor run had to cut the coils to convert from star to delta ,  put it back together to test takes a couple of seconds to get up speed , it has one noisy bearing and needs a belt and a switch but thats all and a good clean up .

You Suck! What a bargain, I have been after a decent linisher for some time, because the cheap or good rule applies to them! Decent ones seem to be around £200 (used) that is a good british machine. Enjoy it!

I wont be using for a while pulled apart again to clean it , if the weight is any mark of quality this weighs in at least 50 kilos .

Looks very well made, far better than modern ones so well worth restoring.

I ran a three phase milling machine on single phase for several years without any problems, just swapped a few wires and added a capacitor. Cost me £12.00 though!  :D

Been looking at one in the used tool store here they want $180.00 bucks for it I've been humming and hawing  whether or not to buy. But I do have a 3phase motor fitted to a worm drive I'd like to use for a muller. I haven't played with converters yet and don't know a star from a delta,  how do you figure out what capacitor to use?

The formulae I read was 70uf per Kw (52uf per hp) and rated at least 1.2 x line voltage. It also needs to be continous duty type.
My machine had a 3/4hp motor so I used a 300v 40uf capacitor after swapping the leads over from star to delta. The capacitor was quite large, maybe 150-170mm long and 32-35mm dia in a metal can.
You only get up to 80% of the motors rated output but I never noticed any lack of power. Also not suitable for motors that need to start under load apparently.
