Dropped my lathe head
« on: December 31, 2015, 01:42:18 PM »
Spent two evenings rescraping the base of the headstock on my Denford lathe, and the mating surface on the bed.

Got it absolutely spot on, aligned perfectly, contacting all over, was lifting the head to move to another bench and I only went and dropped the bugger  :wack: from chest height onto the concrete floor. Put two big dints in the floor.

Blued it up again afterwards and it's well out, the whole thing has skewed a bit in some way. The spindle was installed so hopefully it held the bearings in place and I can "just" scrape it back again!

Luckily if it is knackered i actually have a complete spare head, which is a godsend otherwise the lathe might be scrap!

Dang! I know the feeling....

Hope the bearings are not brinneled.

I would be very surprised if the casting was scewed in some way. I would rather suspect some metal upset around the impact are or points. Once you've stoned or scraped just those back level to the rest, it should be good as gold. Bearings is another matter, but think positive.
