Two little rainy day projects.

I finally got tired of fumbling with a mag base for my lathe. Getting an indicator to stay put was dang near impossible...



Made out of a couple scraps of aluminum and a cam-lock off of my daughters old bicycle seat. The indicator is half of a pair I bought on Ebay for less than $10.00. They are identical 2" travel models and both just needed the lenses popped out and the pointy bits snugged up...good as new!

The next project is one I have meant to do for a couple of months but just now got the free time to do it.



I drilled and taped my cross slide so I can rear-mount my tool post and part things off upside down. Works a LOT better!!

I really like that quick disconnect handel for the indicator.

I can see quick release bits cropping up all over the show  :thumbup:


I still don't get the upsidedown thing... Why does it work so well?  Must be some sort of pressure on gib thing?

Any flexing of the tool is away from the work.

Right road up, the tool flexes into the workpiece.

Not only that, but by parting off upside down the chips fall out of the cut instead of piling up on top of the tool and generating more heat. That is a 9/16" diameter piece of 4140 I am cutting. The parting tool measures .04" and the parts coming off are cool enough to hold. Did I mention I am cutting dry?  :dremel:
