Google Map
« on: May 16, 2016, 10:16:08 AM »
As some of you know from other boards, I admin google maps that show the locations of folks on the board.

I would like to look into the interest for Modders to have a map set up.  If there isn't one already.

I do not put markers on your address, just the general city you live near.

If you would like to see the one I maintain:

We have one on the Boxford users' forum. A good idea in my opinion, although only 10% of the members have posted. There seems to be huge paranoia about putting anything on line.

Seadog,

It's not paranoia when Google can give every man and his dog a view of your house right down to street level simply by knowing your home co-ordinates.

It's surprising what you can glean from the header of emails etc. ISP etc.

Dave

It all depends how much information you wish to add. If you're going to put the full address then, yes, you're possibly asking for trouble. But town, borough or even road name isn't likely to bring the Mongol hoards descending on your workshop, is it?

Observe the other map. Only handle and general location. On other boards it has helped me meet someone who kinda mentored me in metal casting. Without seeing he was in my area I'd have taken years to get where I am now.

I can't imagine that many people from my part of the world will show up on the map (apart from Abraham, who is 4 hours or so south of me) but the nice thing is that this could be a nice way to make a pleasant discovery.

I'm in!

For those paranoid, just elect your local pub/coffee shop as your location, should anyone want to meet up it makes a good neutral location.  Then after getting well oiled you can all stagger back to the workshop.

Just get doing and make swarf, you can decide what its going to be later.

Great idea re the pub/coffee shop!
Pin me to the map

How will this work?
Do we PM someone with our details like name and our declared location and pub?

I would love to know who else is active in Ireland.

I would like to be on the map. I live in Mandal, on the the southern tip of Norway.
Nothing is impossible, it just take more time to figure out.

Sounds like a unanimous AYE to me.   :nrocks:

https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1yzP6dM2C2yeti0msljLA5Ny_pwQ

All I need to add you in is your City/State/Country.

I will NOT add you in unless explicitly asked.  So any conspiracy theorists can feel safe that I'm not going to let your location be known without your knowledge.

I got a few folks added who had asked above.  Make sure I know your:
City/town name  AND
State/village/shire/whatever AND
Country

I put one guy on Reunion island instead of LA Reunion island....Silly Toolshed!

Thanks for playing!  Got y'all added!  (Double check your locations please.)  I'm not meaning for these to be right on top of you, but ai want to be sure they're within a short distance.  Example, I put Manchester, Bury in search and there is a town called Bury just NorthWest  of Manchester proper....is it Manchester (where I have your icon) or Bury.
