thread dial for a minilathe.
« on: November 04, 2016, 01:08:04 PM »
Hi
I have a small import lathe, it's a Chester Comet, its metric and I would like to make a thread dial for it.

the leadscrew is 2mm pitch.

what I need to know is what diameter gear and how many teeth do I need to mesh with the leadscrew.

thanks in advance for any input.
cheers
Roy.
I used to be confused, now I just don't know.

Hi Roy -- My 2mm pitch leadscrew is (Maj Dia) 15.95 mm and uses a 16T gear to drive the threading dial.  Does this help?

Hi
thanks Lew, that gives me a start.
I've been trawling the net and the more I read the more complicated it seems.
some say you need two different gears to cover the range.

lots to think about.

cheers
Roy.
