What an interesting measuring thingumybob  :ddb:

Does the anvil with the red blob on it pivot into two positions? The scaling, being red on one side implies that it refers to the measurement to the red portion of the anvil, and if the anvil doesn't pivot then the object being measured has to be an odd shape.

My first guess is that is for magnifying the measurement of something fairly thin such as sheet metal or whatever )

(When I first saw it I thought that it was a jewellers gem measure, but I think the small size of the moving 'beak' precludes that)

Does anvil has V or slot?

Could this be used to measure set in saw blade? It has a little resemblance of saw setting tool, but that would be very tiny blade and for set, it should have a locking feature.

Some kind of hardness gauge given the large anvil versus the point which appears to be lower than the upper jaw after the point, enough area to raise a burr?

Sorry but can't resist!
The 50p is to show that we can still produce something in metal that is useable by all UK inhabitants!!

You slip the waistband of your victim's underwear between the jaw and the anvil, and then perform the maneuver commonly referred to as the "wedgie" by grabbing the black handle only.

Only if you reach the uppermost limit of the scale can you refer to it as an atomic wedgie  :jaw:
