tablet charger woes.

Hi
Recently my wife's tablet stopped charging so I took the charger apart, it's just a wallwart type.
now I've seen loads of capacitors with blown tops but I've never seen this before.


the cover has blown clean off the cap  :zap: incidentally the ERS of the cap was 13 ohms instead of .2.

replaced the cap and it seems to be working now.

You don't see that too often any more.
Those caps are designed to split open at the top before the bottom crimp lets go.
This wasn't always the case. In my miss spent youth I did some time as an electronics tech. One slow Friday afternoon, we amused ourselves firing the cans off some 16V electro's by poking them into a power point and flicking the switch..

I remember when I was a young engineer, a tech had put electro cap in a circuit backwards. It didn't work, and he had just sat up having been leaning over the board to see why. A loud bang and the shell embedded itself in the acoustic ceiling. One very lucky tech...
