Facemill
« on: August 05, 2017, 01:04:43 PM »
I have had a 50mm facemill with a 32mm Weldon skank , that I have nothing to hold it with , turned it down to MT3 to fit my mill , this is tough stuff so small cuts and I had to screwcut the thread for a extention to meet the drawbar , turned down a 1/2" UNF bolt drilled and taped 10mm for the drawbar ,tested it on some hot roled mild steel not the best finish but it shifts metal quickly .

Hi chipenter,
Nice job on converting the face mill
I have a few similar cutters,
Regarding the finish I wonder if the correct inserts are fitted?
I had trouble when I went to use the spare tips that came with one cutter I bought  :bang:
It turned out that the tips were incorrect having no clearance to the cut surface when used
the finish looked just like the results in your photo !!

Tips are SPKT plenty of clearance and I got a better finish by incresing the feed , I could hear it picking up the chips if I went slow .

Hi chipenter
what size are the insert sides ?
On the cutter I have the tip side dimensions are 1/2in.
The tips that gave zero clearance were KC725M
The correct style tips for my cutter are R245 or GH330

I have very little knowledge on the myriad of cutter tip applications out there
I tend to try out what's to hand and see how it works
I tend to buy bits at autojumbles and the like  :palm:
