A simple bit of turning... :med:

Looks better with a bit of gun blue to colour it, but what is it?

A tool height gauge for poor people who do not have quick change tool posts!

Lets check it with a piece of thin steel between the tool point and a round piece,  seems to be not too bad at all! :ddb:

John:

I have been reading over some old posts and came across this one. Myself, I think that it is a great idea. Should rank right up there with sliced bread. Its quick, its cheap, its simple, what more can a person want.

142 people have read this before me and not one has left a comment of any kind.

Job well done John. Everybody should have one of these. Thanks for showing it John.

Cheers

Piddling time John, sorry.

That is a great idea, but unfortunately slightly out of date.

As I mentioned in my post about setting centre height.

http://madmodder.net/index.php?topic=1661.0

With such a lot of people now switching over to tipped tooling, this sort of toolng has now become redundant because it can't cope with the negative top rake some of these tips use.

But if everything you use is positive or flat, then no problems.

John

I made something similar when starting out except the reference surface is the flat top of the tool.  That way I can gauge the tool height by sliding my fingernail across the the point where the lathe tool meets the alignment tool.  Your fingers are amazingly sensitive at detecting this sort of thing and, as tools go, they're always handy.

I just set a sharp tool up on centre and scribed a line onto two of my most used squares, both sides.

All the old turners did this when i was an apprentice.

Why bother making an extra tool when one can do two jobs ?

This really came to life the second time around. Maybe I'll have to kick-start a few more old posts that never seemed to get their due recognition.

Please do this was a lot of fun and even a How I do IT post.  Where we can all add how we do things - like what do u use to set tool hight and every body adds what they do -lots of other topics could be covered like that.

Every time I see a posting for a tool height tool. I think, "YES I`ll make one!"

Then, I notice my tool is waving about in space...... Not over the cross slide like everyone else`s......

No wonder it chatters, at times.......

Hmmmm......

I have now been using a try square with the center finder as the guide for the height of the tool bit.  poor picture but can see the insert bit under the center finder

That's a good idea, Ed!

But it's so much easier, when we finally get around to making that dedicated guage.......
