Well I had to bite..... I just couldn't resist any longer!!

Here is a teaser.... Since I'm going on a mini holiday on Thursday to Sunday, Tuesday is pool night and Wednesday is packing etc.... There will be no further advancements till at least next week

Just to get you where I'm upto...

Yep.... It's going in reverse!!!

Not a lot of describing.... It's getting late again

It had to be like this..... I just like the shapes!

Resistance was indeed futile!!

I just had to get my head around a few things before I started....

Yes John I know it's bronze.... Only cause of the way it's presented with the black twist in it.... Oh, and the way it machines. Comes off in swirls and curls not sintered stuff like brass

I like the bronze look when polished, plus a bronze cyl with a brass piston might wear better?

There is going to be some ali in there somewhere too, possibly a bit of stainless? it's all up in the air at the mo'

Now, The flywheel..... I think it would be a bit silly to try the cutouts on such a small piece.... But I might try on a donor part first.... See about a bit of confidence!
(I do already have a flywheel plan

)

Robert.... Tie clasp? It'd really distort your tie.... It's pretty heavy

I think with this little nodder, the more wear, the smoother it runs. They will in fact run on breath power, and a clapped out old codger like me can only manage about 1 psi lung power. Now get a bagpipe player, they can push out up to 4 psi, the thing would take off.

Do I detect a little bit of yellow clucking bird there. Just get the flywheel made on the RT and be done with it.

Not a complete clucking bird John..... I just don't want to wreck the material of the flywheel!

Well the next little taster is done, simple and quick cause I needed to go out!

The column, brass and aluminium threaded together (threadlocked) and machined as one.....

Threaded in one end and mounted onto an arbour.

A quick squiggle to see what I was trying to acheive..... Soon altered though

Ball cut first.

Then a couple of concaves.

A little bit of finishing off.

And a preliminary polish to see how it's gonna look.

Test fit.

Well that's it for now, I'm still trying to recover from the camping trip..... More injuries than I know what to do with!!!

Stonking good job mate. What a neat little idea threading the two together and machining as one....would never have thought of that and it looks really unique! Also, fantastic shape.... that ball turner comes in useful.

Glad you like it so far. I've no idea when the next bit will turn up?

I love the contrast between the materials, it looks better IMHO as the tarnish starts to set in..... you can really see the difference then.

Chris, the ball turner (as some might have guessed?!) is my favourite tooling addition..... I just love the shapes I can get.... Well worth the day or so's project time IMHO.

No fight here Stew.... Just thinking of getting this one to run without a wobbly flywheel..... I hope I've been paying attention to all the right posts?!?!

Yep John, getting my eye in.... Now, if only I could rustle up a machinists brain I'd be sorted! For what I do have in my mind I'm gonna need to use a good brain, a very good one!!

It'll probably turn out very different to what I envisage.... As it so often does. I believe that's called "unique"?

Over 120 days since last post..... And then some!

Apologies for my huge absence from general forum life.... I've been a little preoccupied building my house and fixing my car.... Both almost qualify for full time job status!

I've managed a few hours in the workshop here and there but have failed to post the pic's, call it lazy if you wish

So. I've decided to resurrect this thread with some piccies I've been hoarding and a few that were just last week....

A small descriptive line will accompany most pictures but since they speak a thousand words I'll mostly be shutting up now and post them!

Right, last picture was of the column being test fitted to the cylinder.
This is the picture that I omitted at the time due to a wait to see if it works first way of thinking....

I've drilled right up through the column, reason to become clear very soon...

A little bit of pipe bending...

And you have the makings of an steam/air feed

Then a bit to make a smooth transition from the pipe into the 6mm hole in the cylinder end.

Skipping a few pic's of soldering (Pipe not soldered yet) we end up with this...

Now that's where the body parts stopped and the moving parts began....

The piston. Take one part stainless steel and one part brass and silver solder together...

Now make it into a pleasing shape... and drill a hole for the crank pin.

Then drill and tap the crown of the piston before parting off. Attach to an arbour and shape as you feel like.

Solder it all together and give it a little clean up...

Now the base was intended to be a visual delight.... Maybe intended but not quite as I'd have liked. I may re-design this in the future?

I started with a few pieces of 1/2" hex stock. Thinking of the different materials and contrast theme I used brass stainless and aluminium bronze.... This is where the issues started!

opted to soft solder due to heat requirements of silver solder.....

It machined ok for a while....

But then it nearly tested my new face shield!!!

Let it be know (not that many wouldn't have this knowledge already..... Aluminium bronze does NOT soft solder!

So. Not to be discouraged the next evening I salvaged what I could from the disaster and tried again using all brass and stainless.

There was a slight size discrepancy between the stainless and the brass so it wasn't quite as neat as I was shooting for. But it's not bad.... Proves the theory for the design. Just a bit hard to hold it all together and squeeze the molten solder out of the cracks.

Mounted on an arbour (well... An arbour made from a chuck adapter for my lathe chucks!) I set to work on it with my favourite piece of tooling

Not much room for error here

Hence the makeshift saddle stop

Pretty soon I had this.....

A quick mock up....

Now just a flywheel to make and it'll be as finished as it'll probably ever be..... Another well learned lesson in home model engineering!

I love every part and especially the base. I've done similar type of glued-together assembly in my woodturning days, using contrasting woods, but my hat is well and truly off for you.

Glad you like the "so-far" stage. I've just got the flywheel, hub screw and feed pipe to do and it should be good to go....

As Ade pointed out..... This could be a slow process

Not sure about resin Stew... I like the solder cause it seems more permanent. But resin might work? Not sure about it under machining stresses?
So very glad I decided to purchase a full face shield like this one... http://www.hobuk.co.uk/acatalog/polycarbonate-face-shield.html Although I only paid 7 notes for it. When this thing broke up it didn't 'alf fly!
Decided on it due to wearing glasses, goggles etc being uncomfortable over glasses.

Still hoping the base will look better with a bit of a tarnish on the brass? Time will tell. Still might try a re-make? It's quite hard to control when it's a few hundred degrees C! Resin might be the answer?

Good to know you guys are still out there reading and posting.....

Even if it's taken me years to add to it, it feels like a few weeks!

Never even thought it was close to that long since I'd started this

Andrew, Thank you too. I think I made life difficult by trying to alter the design too much. But I just can't help myself? My other engines were much the same.
I've been thinking about the base on and off for months (probably years) and it only struck me to try that form last week

I suppose my brian needed time to charge!?

Hoping to have another go at this next week.... House needs more attention though so might slow me up again?

I just do what feels right. Although the inspiration for the base took over a year to rear it's head!

Still not got onto the flywheel.... A few things have my head tied up again. Been reading up on flywheel cutting the way all the others do it.... Might make a normal one for once.... probably not though

Polishing seems quite easy really these days.... it's the preparation that takes the effort! Gold plating seems a bit too much!!

A few days off over Xmas. I might get the time to set up the RT and get this finished? We will see!

Got a few little ideas up my sleeves Chris.... Maybe once the house is finished, Aprilish (hopefully?) I'll get more time in the workshop?

It will look much better once a tarnish takes hold. after 4 years in the draw it was looking quite good. Then I polished it all up to match the new parts

I'll try some trick photography on it at some point.... See if I can draw the colours out
