Pinning the Column on X-2 Mill
« on: October 14, 2009, 06:00:38 PM »
After getting under .0005"  tram on my mill, using a DTI and the 180 degree rotation method over a 14 inch span, I am contemplating pinning the column with a one or more tapered pins similar to the gap section of lathe beds. My questions are: Has this been done by anyone in the group and if so where were the pin/pins located? I guess I might also ask if this idea is worthwhile?

Joe,

I haven't done this mod to mine, but remember that at work they pinned pieces together that were meant not to move. Make sure you use pins with a threaded hole on one end so you can pull them out or drill all the way through so you can drive the pin out from the other side. I'd go for at least two pins 180 degress apart.

Hope this has helped.
