Square broach
« on: November 28, 2009, 04:17:59 PM »
Hi all, does anyone know where i can get hold of a 1/2" square broach? I want to make a new handle for my Shaper and it has a 1/2" square spindle.
Failing that, does anyone have a good way of making a square hole?

Cheers

You should be able to carve the square hole from a round using your shaper.

Failing that, do as in the C-o-C

J&L do them but at £162.00 I think you will want to find a way to do it yourself. You could file most of it out and then make a broach out of sq silver steel to finish it off.  Or drill most of it out and use your shaper with say a 3/8 sq tool to cut one corner out at a time.

Thanks guys for the reply and ideas. I have decided put the shaper into action on this one. I am going to make a couple of handles, I did'nt realise how much broaches cost  :bugeye:
