My First RC Airboat
« on: September 02, 2008, 01:41:37 PM »
A bit of back ground as to this project. We have a place on the St. Lawrence River were we spend quite a few week ends and long holidays. I'm not one for sitting out in the sun getting toasted,  :P  so I decided I needed a RC boat to occupy my time. 8)  I've always liked and wanted a swamp boat, you know the ones with the airplane engine and the prop. Well since I don't have the cash for the real thing I figured a model would do for "NOW". :-\

I started this project last year. Then for Christmas my parents bought me a plastic race boat. During the run in of the engine, about the third tank of fuel, the engine decided to throw the rod. :o :(  I ordered replacements, but as of this writing I haven't seen it yet. :(  :'(  So it was back to building my "swamp buggy".

I've started a build log on my website, go here "Model Airboat" to view the build log. I'll be doing more on it this winter in hopes of finishing it for next boating season. So book mark the sight or check back here for updates of this project.

Regards,
Bernd

Cool I'm planing on an aluminum version with a 25cc weed wacker engine to match the 1/6th 25cc dune buggy. But teaching myself TIG welding first. Yours is looking good so far.http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/7750/air.html AIRBOATERS WEBRING! you might enjoy this one.

Ok, as Eric asked for, a couple of pics of my boat.

This first is a side by side shot of a purchased plastic boat and my "under cunstrution" airboat. The cigarboat is powerd by a nitro engine with a water prop. The airboat will have a nitro engine also but use an airplane propeller.

Next pic. I laid a yard stick on the airboat so you can get an idea of scale. The airboat measures out to be about 26" long.

Here's more of a top view of the airboat. The inside has one coat of polyurethane added. I still need to get some 1oz. fiber glass cloth to cover the side and bottom. The motor mount is just stuck on there temporarly.

The last pic shows a head on view. The widest part of the boat is approximatly 14.5". One major purchase yet to be made is a radio. Haven't quite figured out what I need for this yet.

Oh, I might add I need an engine also. Somewere in the neighborhood of .025 to .040 cc's.

Keep tuned, I might just get more done now that the public can see it. :o  ;D

Regards,
Bernd

Cool! Thanks for the pictures. Think you got your boards confused tho. Rick owns the other board. Although he is a mod here.

Since it is buried under a bunch of stuff on an extra table in the shop. Here is the web page from tower hobbies.
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGMP7**&P=0

Sorry its a 1/5th buggy, they didn't have the truck when I got it a couple years ago.
I have a 1/6th VW bug body on another RC chassis.

The videos show it pretty well. They are a little artsy for my taste with the colors et all. It does go like a bat and scares people in the parking lot I ran in. as it hurtles towards them at 25 or better per hour. With that weed wacker whine :o

As I said to Eric. It's tough to perform under pressure.  ;D

Thanks Ralph. You can, actually working in wood isn't that much different than metal. The types of tools used may be a bit different. That's about all. I've seen your metal work and I think you would have not problem with one of these builds. All you'd need the first time around is a set of plans.

As I said above not much difference, just the material used. And your right to many damn projects.  :D  :D

I'm just insane with to many vaired projects to do and want to do.  :o  ;D

Pretty neat there PT. I've seen them up close in the hobby store. Quite impressive as far as size is concerned.

You into RC cars? I used to fly RC planes wya back when.

On occasion, to many hobbies. Just liked the size and fun playing with them. Gave up on planes way back when kept landing them on the pointy end  in the ground.

With the paint job and shape coming at you at 25 plus miles hour. It does seem to freak people out. Mostly when I turn to sharp and it barrels rolls and ends up on the wheels and keeps going ;D

You know PT if I show the wife this she'll want one. She owns the real thing and is in love with it.

Aw what the heck, I'll show her. ;D  Maybe I can convince her to buy me one to play with.  :-\  :P

Just so you know the body was something the local shop couldn't get rid of a couple of years ago Only thing I know is it was made in Canada. The guy at the RC shop recommenced the OFNA  Viper Chassis as a good fit and power platform. Plus he had somebody that wanted the body real bad. ::) And it was 3 or so years ago, so I don't know how easy it will be to get one.

Eric,

Have I told you about all the projects I've started and are now setting collecting dust.

Well that boat has some dust on it. I've started to many projects and haven't got half of them done.  :(

But as soon any progress is made I'll post here.

It's good Bernd... I have far far too many projects started (or almost started even) that I do understand. Was just curious as to where you might be with it. Figured after the Bridgey move and refresh you were a little busy.
