Mystery tool: What is it??
« on: August 05, 2010, 11:46:01 AM »
When I bought my Bridgeport, it came with a small selection of tool holders. The strangest, and only one I can't identify is this one. Does anyone know what it's for?

The holes on the top & bottom surface go all the way through, and are angled outwards to the bottom edge (i.e. not perfectly vertical - bottom face has a larger PCD). They look to me like they've been drilled, followed by a 9/32" or 8mm square broach.

The letters "N S P" have been stamped or engraved near 3 of the holes (one letter per hole), but I assume this is the manufacturer rather than anything relating to those holes specifically... No other letters or markings are visible.

Any ideas?
Cheers!

A large fly cutter that uses some kind of insert?

Yes!

Even older than me...... I saw one in a pile of scrap, when I was a new apprentice. It used square section "tools".

Some time previous, we'd gone over to modern throwaway tip cutters.

Still modifying bits of metal... Occasionally, making an improvement!

I'd better get it down to Antiques Roadshow then, that should confuse them  :headbang:

Thanks chaps. I'm guessing it's not really worth keeping. I don't have any suitable inserts, and I already have a 2" shell mill which does most of my surfacing work (which takes standard triangular inserts).
Cheers!

.... I'm guessing it's not really worth keeping....

But it's bound to come in useful sometime, so I'm betting you don't throw it away

Damn, rumbled!

Actually, I've got a monster roughing cutter which needs to be mounted on an R8 collet; it's currently on an INT50 (no use to me)... so I can at least re-use that much of it. I guess the rest will make an excellent paperweight!
Cheers!
