Steve.
The Emergency Stop button, is a handy tool to use under those circumstances........  :D

Very pleased the operator wasn't damaged, during the exercise!

David D

Indeed, the emergancy stop button is there, but never having used it before, it wasn't until some minutes ( well about an hour to be honest) later that I thought, maybe I should have used the emergancy stop button

Fortunately I was wearing my safety glasses as the bits flew from the mill and splattered across the glasses making a nice tinging splattery sound  :bang: All is good though, still safe and sound  I will post up the pictures later of the broken ones ...
very new to all this....

Sounds interesting Steve!  :jaw:

Not a good feeling is it!? That's definitely a way to learn a very valuable lesson. I remember shattering endmills due to lack of knowledge..... Friendly forums helped a lot  :mmr:

Note about the bits hitting your face.... I've started wearing one of these http://www.wholesaletoolwarehouse.com/safety-and-workwear/eye-protection/140863-face-shield-visor

I wear my normal glasses while working (else I'd get nothing mad worth talking about) so this is a great solution instead of bulky (and often painful over a few hours) glasses over glasses.

Go on then  :worthless:  (note to our leaders.... I think we need a "Come on show us your pic's" version of this too?  :poke:   :)  When you're ready  )

Glad to hear you survived Steve!

Now that I have finally been prescribed glasses (just got them today), I am going to get a face shield like the one has shown.

Ordering my glow powder in the next few days. Thanks for the ideas Ralph.

OK, managed to get a couple of pictures sorted out. See if you can spot the deliberate mistakes made while making these items

The first and second pictures are of the one that I did in the wrong order and it didnt have enough strength to finish it, yes, I should have known better but I have to learn these things for myself...

The third, forth and fifth pictures are where I was lacking in light and took a (bad) best guess as to the height I needed the mill, this one caused the work to bend / crack and the mill to lock up. The forth one is its better side, lol....

It should be noted my camera always makes the work look somewhat grooved, in real life these pieces do not look that bad at all and would have polished up very nicely if only the operator could finish one properly, lol...

Damn, I just ordered one of these and paid the nice £6+ delivery which I didn't mind, right up until I just realised this company is about a 30 minute walk and I could have got there in my dinner hour and just paid cash  Ah well, what is done is done and its on its way now I guess, lol

Steve....  :jaw:  :bugeye:  :jaw:

Holy asterisks!!!

You weren't kidding about the crash!

I don't know if you have watched my videos? But they show the order I do these in. and the way I support the shaft while milling.
Although the version I make like this is sped up 16x it shows what you now know about orders.

Each cut I put on is only ~0.20-0.30mm due to the length of work sticking out it needs to be delicate. (I know... After the horse has bolted!)

Still, looks like you're going to get a good un after all this practice

Bout the face mask..... At least you'll know where to go for the next one   I'll need to replace mine soon (or the visor bit) they soon scratch up and look a little misty. When I look at all the oil, swarf and stuff I wipe off it that would have been in my face, it's money well spent!

Good luck with your next go.... Take it easy  :dremel:

OK, well had another "crack" at it tonight, and although not perfect, I do know where I can improve but for tonight I kinda cheated and used the original screw cap I made, hence it does not fit exactly, I could part off the one I used to hold it, but thought I would continue to use that for holding work in the future :)

Anyway, here is my attempt, its been great fun and I am glad I decided to give it a "bash"

Thanks for sharing this project as without it I would not have learnt what I have learnt

Sweet!  :headbang:

Well done that man   :nrocks:

Looks well and glows well...  My prototype has the tap "teeth" in it. I figured out how far to send the tap and everything else as I went through the next few. I was actually thinking of sending the tap all the way to the top on one of the next ones... Leaving the "teeth" effect there as part of the styling? Might work?   Got to buy more brass rod first... Gone through 2ft of it in the last few weeks   :dremel:

About parting off the arbour to make the cap. Not telling you what to do but more why I would....  I know that when you're first starting out doing these things you might find making the threaded arbour a chore and as you said, you can use it for more.
Most basic reasons why I'd say make one for everyone individually
1/ obvious, you know this from your write up. They match up.
2/ you will only get better and more able at making such parts with repetition. (don't know if it was an issue?) I know I used to hate making threads and then re-making them Parting off used to be a nightmare too!  But now I just do it cause it's such a quick part of the job.

As said, just trying to point this stuff out.  You may be fully aware and just wanted to get it done?  :)

I've been playing tonight.... Got some experiments done. Shall we say they look promising.....

I'll get some faffing done and then post a few pic's in a bit

Very pleased that you've gotten one made and posted it... I know of one other completed version so far. Maybe he'll post a few pic's on here soon? But I know he's also experimenting with his designs.

Init awesome having the machines to make fun stuff?!?!  :borg:  :proj:  :borg:

Eric, this might sound mad, but I`ve found my tube. The clean clear end of a bic biro or if you want something thicker, a gel pen!! Mine is waiting to be cut!

Thanks for the idea Ralph, it was a great little hours project that I whipped together after many weeks of doing work to my machines and general maintainance gearing up for my next big project. It didn`t turn out perfect and it could be made a lot better but I thought I`d try and come up with something a little different.

By the way, the tube for the powder did come from the clean end of a  pen! Infact, I took it from a cheap gel pen and there was at least 30mm + free clean ends on some of them!!

New take on the idea there Chris

Very ingenious use of the pen and parts  :smart:  Nice use of a thread cut too!

Don't you just love the way they glow?  :headbang:

I've just walked in from the workshop now... 02:15 on a school night! Been teaching/guiding a friend on my machines cause he wanted to make one of the keyrings... Aluminium bronze is an interesting material to work with!

I also forgot how long it takes a nervous newbie to do everything

Turned out quite attractive in the end though... I have not got any pic's of the build at all! But he has so I'll get hold of them and post a couple next week.

Right, time for some ZZZs

A little  :update:  (been wanting to use that for a while!)

I've been experimenting with resins, namely epoxy glue like Araldite.

The first attempts were driven by necessity as I needed to fill something with glowing matter (more on that if it works?)

Still, point being that the first test was done using what I had on the shelf. Araldite. This was a standard form of the stuff but was translucent and a kind of yellowish colour (probably green or orange... But who knows?) This worked but was dull.

So I then purchased some clear epoxy for a mere 1.75 British pounds. Setting in 1min and curing in 5-30  :bugeye: Needed to be quick.
I've since found a curing in setting in 5min's and curing in 15... probably easier to work with?

Anywho, point being a 5ml syringe filled 3/4 full with equal line measures (well, pretty equal) of epoxy, hardener and glow powder. Will fill an approx 500mm length of acrylic tube with a 3mm bore :jaw: and glows like buggery!

much easier to cut and fit into the finished keyring and if you make different coloured rods up you can simply cut small lengths off by rolling a razor blade on them then snapping them off. Then insert  as required.

For a multi coloured one like the one in Steve's post you just cut two short lengths that have the join meeting in the centre behind the cage so it's not really visible

Saves a huge amount of time filling fiddly little tubes and probably uses only 30%ish of the glow powder/tube due to the volume of the glue.

Finally a few pic's of the experiments...
The mix, prepared thus and mixed furiously using a scraper...

Using the scraper the syringe was filled and the piston re-inserted (pointing it nozzle up to expel the air.... you know? Like doctors do!)
(Note special syringe nozzle created for the filling of blind holes. Long thin and with a cross filed V over the nose... worked a treat  :borg:)

Syringe empty and the acrylic rod and a bit filled.

Turn the lights off.... And yes, that was wielded as a 500mm mini lightsabre

The original araldite tests next to the clear epoxy version.

And the lights off... The two longer ones were both blue glow. The smaller one was an attempt with the aqua version (this is always slightly brighter than blue) Here they look very similar brightness (all hit with a dose of 405nm (blue) "frickin laser beam" - Movie ref anyone?)

Hope that helps some of you?

You just need a few disposable 5ml syringes and some "clear" epoxy glue. (I had to turn the nozzle down to fit the acrylic tube)

Cheers Nick  :)  They glow very well for a 10-20 min's then quite a consistent glow (easy to find in the dark)  for the next 8-10 hours.

Yup, Well remembered   From the first one. Ill tempered sea bass wearing lasers on their heads

Don't want to be too much of a wet blanket, but if you keep your keys in your pocket, the light won't get to them to charge up the glow powder. And if you leave them lying around to charge up in daylight, you are more likely (at my age) to forget where you put them, and might have to wait until it goes dark before you can find them again...

Troy,

You will be upto this level in no time at all   I've only been back on the machines for 5 years.
The last time before that was 15 years before in college.... 4hrs a week for a year! I made a centre finder, a toolmakers clamp, a tap wrench and a die holder.... So long ago!   :bugeye:  I'm getting old!

You're on a new learning curve....  But you're in a good place to get some knowledge. loads of talented guys on here
You'll be fine... You're one of us now  :borg:  :)

Andy... I keep my keys on a hook when they're not in general use. They get light from the window so it's all good.

They do glow in pitch black for 12hrs! just turn the lights off and shut the curtains/blinds! :)

Dave... Stop egging him on  :poke:
