1969 Beetle, light resto
« on: July 09, 2013, 01:00:30 PM »
Here's what I'm currently working on. It's not mine, it's a good mates.

It's getting rear bumper hangers with partial inner wings, a removable rear valance, and near side heater channel bottom plate and closing panel.

(***edit, sorry, the pics seem a little big for the forum, most forums I use resize them automatically so I'm not sure how to correct it :(***)

How she started....

Engine out...

One new bumper hanger...

Bottom plate work under way...

Don't worry about the pictures, they look fine on my laptop. I thought I had put an auto resizer on the forum.

Nice bug. Any plans for the engine?

Engine is a reasonable spec 1641 with twin kadron carbs and performance valve gear. The owner likes his chrome bits as you can see, so it will all get a good spruce up before it goes back in, but apart from that it will stay the same spec.

Brings back memories!  69 and 70 were my favorite years.  I put about 140,000 miles on a 69.  Here in Canada they had a 4 joint rear end (IRS) which was a HUGE improvement.

I have been tossing around the idea of getting either a Bug or a Ghia...

It might depend on where you live.  I have had both.   The ghia seems designed to rust.  There are lots of nooks and crannies that trap water and the bits to repair the damage are getting harder to find. (a lot like a porche 356)  Anything like fenders, headlight buckets, bumpers, chrome trim etc. were all dealer only and very expensive.  Less of an issue if you are in Arizona!   The ghia was less comfortable (at least for me).  The floor pan is wider and you sit a bit diagonal.  I usually got out with a back ache.
