Pottyengineering Cutter Grinder
« on: November 18, 2013, 04:07:16 AM »
I've had this project on the go for a few years now, its been very much stop go, any way I was getting close to getting something to try so decided to have a concerted effort of getting it working.

This is it yes I know it look a bit Heath Robinson but it does work.

What we have is a compilation of commercially available parts to make a cutter grinder.

It consist of one of those milling table that you can buy to add to a drill I got mine from bluechip a few years ago.

A myford vertical slide

A cheapo bench grinder

And a set of Stevenson Er32 index blocks

The only thing I made was a holding fixture made from ally jig plate and a toggle clamp.

To use you first have to dress the wheel up so you have a nice square edge on it, you set the cutter so that the cutting edge is square to the base, the cutting angle is set by positioning above the centre of the wheel using the vertical slide, you then advance to the table so that you see sparks wind across to the centre (i'll be fitting a stop to aid this) index the block to locate another cutting edge repeat repeat until you have all the cutting faces nice and sharp, to put on secondary clearance you simple lift the cutter higher up above the wheel centre height.

It took me less than an hour to sharpen this lot up.

This is the finish before and after from one of the mills

I still need to do a bit of fine tuning and to make a fixture so sharpen slitting saw and fit a cup wheel.

But I now have a nice draw full of sharp end mills.

 :D

Simple and clever, I may well borrow your basic concept if you don't mind ?

Hi Stew

Glad you have now got it working, nice to use redundant items you have aquired, it keeps the cost down. You must have over £400 of gear there which is now saving you pounds in milling cutters.

                                                                                                   Cheers David

I'll have to turn the Job offer down John  :D but thanks for your interest.

Before I retired I had an endless supply of nice new sharp cutters via the company stores but I've been slowly using my stock up with the blunt cutter box getting fuller, so I had to do something.

I really like this, making a cutter grinder is certainly on the list of things to do!

Over the last week I've added a stop and fitted a cup wheel to the other end of the grinder, I've also made a fixture for sharpening slitting saws.

spent the afternoon sharpening up my slitting saws  :D :D :D :D :D

Hey I like your grinder set up. The slides are they a set of drill press slides? I'm in the process of getting something set up to sharpen some of my dull end mills. I'm starting with the air bearing tool holder and a setup to sharpen the sides of end mills. Been thinking about the grinder set up and what to use and you have given me something to think about. Thanks for posting!

Very nice!  I have that very same sliding table, too. Back before I bought my mill I had planned to use it to make a horizontal mill. But never did.
I love it when a Plan B comes together!

I forgot to say that I also changed the mounting for the motor:- got rid of the plastic pyramid base it came it just wasn't ridged. bolted the motor direct to the vertical slide and re wired it up with some five core wire with the capacitor in the a separate on off switch.

Thanks for your interest

Nice one Stew!

I love to see components, collected over time, come together successfully.  :smart:

What a handy weapon! Well done!

Nice one Stew :)

I bodged together something similar a while ago using a old cross-vice and a cheap vertical slide.

I used a motorcycle fork leg as a slide for the flute grinder (I've since added an air feed to make it a sort-of air bearing)
