Potty Vertical Cross Single
« on: December 21, 2013, 07:26:13 AM »
Just started on building a Vertical Cross Single, its very loosely based on the Kenion Engine that can be seen at the Northern Mill Engine Society at Bolton http://www.nmes.org/ I've designed it along the lines of the simple horizontal engine that can be made with limited equipment and has a lot of parts common to or similar to this engine.

This is my progress to Date

If any one would like a copy of my V1 drawings just send me a PM with you're email address and I'll fix them up, but at the moment this is very much a work in progress so the drawings will change.

Stew-

I will be watching this with a lot of interest. You may be aware that we (NMES) have recently done a lot of work on the valve gear on the Kenyon engine, which was getting a bit sloppy in places. It has a double slide valve on the high pressure cylinder, one of which provides a variable cut-off for steam economy. The linkage to achieve parallel motion is quite interesting and I see that you have this feature in your design.

I'm not sure about the 'cross' bit in your engine description; are you thinking of adding a second cylinder?

We have steam days on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29th December for anyone who would like to see this engine running (and all the others). Free admission, children with adults are very welcome. A visit might make a welcome alternative to endless turkey, TV and computer games?

Hi Bill

I've been quite a regular visitor to the museum I'm hoping to go next week end but may not make it due to an illness in the family.

The Lumb cut off is one of the things that I like about the Kenyon but I'm afraid I've simplified that out of this model, I did try drawing up a more detailed engine some time ago but to get the detail, it would have ended up to large an engine for me.

I have thought long and hard about adding a second cylinder it shouldn't be to difficult to do but I'm building it as part of a series of simple engines for the beginner based around common  parts that I've been writing up for Model Engineer, so I'm keeping it as a single. I think I have a bit of a cheek even calling it a model of the Kenyon engine because I have simplified it so much but it should show Phineas Crowther  parallel motion off well.

Thanks for your interest

Fished off some more parts, I was a bit unsure how to make the valve stem support I wonted a design that could be made without a mill I hit on the idea of using some cold drawn angle I had.

These are the parts

I like the look of it.

I'll slap a bit of JB weld on it so it looks more like a casting. It won't be easy to adjust the valve events but I'll deal with that when I get.
to it.

Just given my shed its pre Christmas clean out and oiled my machines so that me closed down for the holiday.

All have a good Christmas

Herr's wishing you a happy a prosperous new year.

Got a few more parts made, the swing arms took a little creative thinking I want this engine to be within the capabilities of a Newbie with a modestly equipped shop, the holes in the swing arms need to be symmetrical with them selves and with each other, I started off by first centre drilling a pip on the end of each arm I then marked them out to give a guide as to where to cut away the meat,

I then drilled the centre 4mm hole, then pinned the two arms together with a 4mm dowel I then drilled one 3mm hole all the way through both arms, I then swivelled the top arm 180 deg and used it as a guide to drill the second hole in the bottom arm, flip them over and do the same to the other arm this way they must have the same centre distance and be symmetrical to each other.

Then into the four jaw and supported on the centre chew away the unwanted bits, then cut off the pip and finish off to shape with filing buttons.

This is how its looking

Time for a bit of an update

I fabricated the fly wheel from a bit of 41/2" welded tube a length of 1" bar drilled and formed into a circle with slip rolls a hub and some spokes

Also more or less got all the work done on the cylinder

And the crank and eccentric

Just got the base and the top to do.

Congratulations on your progress. The flywheel looks very good; the proportions are very reminiscent of the original. (http://www.nmes.org/) That flywheel is about 14 feet diameter and its 'presence' makes itself felt if you stand under it with the engine running.

You may have noticed the two black marks running around the outside of the flywheel. They are nothing to do with the original design, but a side-effect of the motor drive we use to turn the engine when not using steam. They are the rubber from a pair of car tyres that drive the flywheel.

The original engine looks to me like a collection of clever ideas all put together in one machine. There is the parallel linkage (an interesting job to erect in the original engine!), the Mercury cups liked to the governer linkage, the Lumb trip etc. etc.

Hi Bill

When I first saw the engine "running" at Bolton with that motor drive on the fly wheel I thought they couldn't get it going on steam:- how wrong I was. As an engine it has got a look of evolving over time, I would love to model that Lumb trip gear but I just couldn't get it down to a size that I could make and having it look, it would be just to big. I can't really claim this is a model of the Kenion engine as I've taken huge liberties in order to keep it simple for a newbie to make, and I've only given it one cylinder, but adding a second cylinder shouldn't be too difficult.

I think it will make a really nice engine just the way you have planned it.

I agree about the 'evolving over time' description. It looks to me like a series of possibly good ideas that got tacked on as time passed. Quite a few of our engines have been modified in their past working lives. McNaughting beam engines was quite popular at one time and we have an example of that type of modification, as I am sure you know. The McNaughting leaves the engine looking fine in my opinion, but the Kenyon engine does have the look of 'bits everywhere' to me.

The Kenyon engine runs on steam very well, especially after our latest overhaul, but it does use quite a bit of steam so we can't run it for very long with our single boiler. The motor drive does work very well - we have recently added an inverter for the motor drive, which is noticeably smoother starting and doesn't remove quite as much tread from the tyres.

Thanks for your interest in my project Bill I visit the Museum from time to time hopefully we will meet up for a natter.

Any way I've got it running

Its a bit noisy but that will tune out bits are catching or have an headache but nothing that a bitter of fitting can't sort.

Its on a test base at the moment I want to fit it to a tile effect base,

I'm also going to make valve for it.

Thanks for your input Chaps

Baron:- Its my own design I have drawn it up but they need revising, I change things as I go along, I'll make the finished drawings available to those who want them:- so just keep watching and ask me the ? again when I have it all finished.

Thanks again

Hi John

I cribbed the tiling method from Jason he used it to make the base for his Benson engine.

Basically what you do is paint a lump of high density chip board with the base colour in my case this was white, then you cover the whole lot with frog masking tape then you simply mark it out and remove the bit of tape where you want it to be black, you then spray the whole lot black let it dry and then pick off the bits of tape to give the black and white tile effect.

Cheers Dave:-

Starting to follow your build in the Model Engineer and would appreciate receiving a copy of the drawings. Not sure if there is a choice of metric or imperial so will accept whatever you can forward. My email address is within my profile as I am not sure how to send PM's as yet.
