posting pictures
« on: May 19, 2014, 06:10:07 PM »
I wish to start a new topic of a engine I have just finished building and wish to post a few pictures, I think that I can post them direct from my computer using the attachment and other option but how do I know at what size they will appear and how do I control the size of them.

Hi Hugh , someone will probably give you a better answer but how I learnt how to do the photo resizing was a step by step instructions Ralph had posted, I am not sure where they are listed but if you look in the 'tools' section on the main home page I have been doing a thread on Harrison L5 rescue and it will be mentioned with a link within the first page or two of the thread. I have just posted on the thread so it should be near the top. Hope this helps.
  Cheers Mick.

My now a Bit outdated tutorials (Can't edit them any more) are at the top of the Gallery board.  http://madmodder.net/index.php/board,11.0.html     :)

Posting from an external host is benificial to the board as it takes up less space and costs the collective less in the long run  :borg:

Modelman, I think I can answer your actual question as you posed it.

You can tell what size they will by what size you upload them. So whatever size you make them before you upload them, that's the size they will appear.

Photos for display on computers are commonly measured in pixels -- meaning dots.

Photos uploaded here should be 800 pixels across or less.  I commonly use 640 or 480 across, very occasionally 800 if something really needs to be blown up to see details.

If you try to upload pictures wider than 800 pixels the whole picture will not be seen and users will have to scroll across to see all the parts of the picture.

Since most cameras take pictures thousands of pixels across, you need to shrink them down to a more manageable size before uploading them to this forum.

The way you do that is by using a photo program on your computer. All such programs have a feature to "scale" a photo. Often you have a choice to scale by inches, mm, or pixels. Choose pixels and then scale them down to the size you want.

There are a huge number of photo programs, and everyone has a favorite. It doesn't matter which one you use, just get familiar with this one scaling feature, and you're good to go!

Hope that helps!

This is what it would look like if you loaded a photo directly from a typical camera (2848 pixels across) without resizing it (click on thumbnail to view):

I use Photoshop and resize everything to 800 pixels on the largest side. It seems to work well.
