Title: Motorized My Milling Machine
Post by: snub on March 25, 2017, 09:04:11 PM
This was definitely a worthwhile project. I found some well priced right angle 12 volt gear motors on E-bay, got some belts and pullies from SDP/SI, and some chain and sprockets from Princess Auto. The belts come off in a jiffy if I want to convert to manual operation. The z axis motor was a little slow so I added a DC- DC boost converter and cranked it up to 16.5 volts. It doesn't run for very long, so I don't think it will do it much harm. All three motors are controlled by pulse width modulators so I can adjust the speed as needed. I made a video, so I will post that up later.

Good for you Snub.
Glad it works to save you endlessly winding handles, one of the things on my to do list but way down the queue for now. My only gripe is that the motors sound a bit on the noisy side but hey, it works for you and perhaps it's just my 'sensitive?' ears? I cannot yet take out any hearing aids but like the eyeball cataracts aren't bad enough yet to get fixed.
