Title: press fits for furniture
Post by: jcs0001 on November 10, 2015, 10:30:04 AM
Not a new technique but perhaps new for furniture.

It does result in a very unique piece.

John, Industry has been using this form of shrink fit for years.
In the past while replacing the starter ring gear on a flywheel (before I obtained a gas torch)I placed the put fly wheel in a freezer for about 24 hours then leaving the ring gear in boiling hot water prior to the fit the two came together nicely.

Well of course cart wheels had their rims shrunk on hundreds of years ago. The wooden wheel rim would be water soaked, and the forged and hammer welded rim would be heated red hot in a circular pit fire. Rim was then pulled out, popped on the wheel, hammered into place and buckets of water tossed on to stop the wheel burning. Turn of the 19th / 20th  century there were even special rim heating gas burners running off towns gas available to blacksmiths and wheelwrights.

Nowt new in engineering
