Title: Hello From Darkest Basildon, Essex, UK
Post by: BarryK on April 23, 2016, 01:27:14 PM
Hi just arrived here, I'm a retired Instrument tech and I like Fishing and Home engineering.
At home I have a Myford S7 and a Warco VMC, plus all the necessary bits and pieces required...........also I have been helping to organise a local 'Men's Shed' (google it if you don't know what Men's Sheds are all about) At the shed we have a good selection of woodwork tools plus an (as yet!) meagre selection of Engineering tools, the latest additions to our machine tools stocks include a new Warco WM140 lathe (same as Grizzly GO 768) and a new, small Warco wood turning lathe.

Cheers
Barry

Hi Barry welcome to planet Zod.
A fellow shedder, I belong to the Gosport Shed formed in 2013.
You have probably come by your tools from donations sounds like a good haul you have.
Look forward to any future projects you have.
John

Thanks for the welcome folks -  :nrocks:

Shame about missing the drill press, we have got one (new from Screwfix) but it sounds like a bag of spanners and doesn't have a Morse taper socket...........just recently replaced the pulley bearing on my old (1942 vintage) Tauco drill press , now it purrs like a kitten, don't think that Screwfix one will ever purr.......  :(

Welcome Barry! Remember....  :worthless:

I used to live not far from Basildon, I initially moved south to Ilford, then over-shot and ended up in Benfleet, then Rayleigh, then it all went Pete Tong & I ended up on Canvey Island for a while... I finally came back home to here in the frozen North - ironically, not that far from Mike (although I didn't know that until I read this thread), up here in Merseyside. I was actually born in Chester & lived in a village a few miles south for most of my formative years.

I remember Basildon well, not the most salubrious of town centres (but, then, Birkenhead town centre is no better), but it has a couple of decent restaurants lurking about the place...

So... when do we get to see some of your projects? :)

Hi Ade - "So... when do we get to see some of your projects? :) "

Projects, what are they? I'm very tied up with The Shed at the moment, mostly making things ('orrible wooden things..) for others and fettling the new lathe.

When I do get around to project work, items include: modding a small machine vice to allow it to tilt,  making a new spool for one of my old centre pin reels, modifying another (home made) centre pin reel and making yet another cp reel of my own design - as you may be able to tell, I'm pretty much in to vintage and pseudo vintage fishing tackle............

Cheers
Barry

PS - Also making and modding some bits for the new Shed lathe, including rear tool post and removing some of the 'stiction' from the bloody awful gibs and ways.

welcome

soon there is a chance to increase the number of tools in the collection-- Doncaster cometh ! Ok not Harrogate show but venues easy to find from A1!

With apologies to those on other continents! :nrocks:

HI Barry - welcome to Madmodder!

PS - Also making and modding some bits for the new Shed lathe, including rear tool post and removing some of the 'stiction' from the bloody awful gibs and ways.

You can reduce stiction a lot by going over the gibs with a scraper hand-flaking oil pockets into it. It's easy to do with a bit of practice. If you can't lay your hands on a scraper you can grind an old file on the end and use that.

Pete.
