Title: your recommendations: web host etc.
Post by: BillTodd on December 30, 2016, 01:52:17 PM
Virgin mediocre (hack spit)  dumped their web hosting (claiming it to be a free extra !!!!!) earlier in the year.

I'm looking for personal recommendations for a good cost-effective web host and domain name service, so...

who do you use?

Hi Bill:

I can relate to your story.  In western Canada my isp/cable tv provider is Shaw.  All these isp's are reading from the same script because Shaw also sent thier loyal and high-paying shaw customers a Christmas email saying they  will eliminate the "free webspace" service which they evaluate as being worth nothing because it was just an "add on" and there would be no adjustment to the monthy bill.....

My combined cable TV and (lowest speed) internet currently costs about 150 bucks a month Canadian (say around $1800 a year) so it's not like I really was getting anything for free.....After 20 years of being a faithful customer, my mission now is to make damn sure there is a huge reduction in how much I pay for my services.....

In the meantime I've shopped around for a webhost/domain....GoDaddy seems to be popular and like the others the cost for a small account will be about $5 a month to replace the webspace.   My current choice is homing in on "HostPapa" but that's mostly because it's a private Canadian company but it is a little cheaper and has a good reputation.

Let us know what you find out there....

If you are in Canada I can recommend Rebel.ca for domain names and HostPapa for hosting. I have 5 web sites with HostPapa for over 7 years.  I would pick a country specific domain, e.g. .ca as it gets you away from the other great evil on the web, the US DMCA. Use your domain for email as well and you are then free to pick ISP of your choice as your email address won't change.

GoDaddy is expensive for domain names. They have also supported some really bad legislation in the US. I would look for one that has country specific domains, e.g. .co.uk

For actual internet service I use Start.ca, they resell access at lower cost. So I am still paying one of the evil 3 (in Canada there are in essence only 3 providers of significance) but they don't get much. For TV I use Netflix and the library for movies. News is via internet. Unless you really into sports, TV is not worth paying for. This site seems like an interesting view of alternate sip's in Canada: http://www.canadianisp.ca/. There should be something similar to show options in the UK.

It wasn't just VM that dumped the service that must have cost them close to nothing to supply with the current cost of storage and the fact that they host the DNS so minimum cost there too. There were a few people abusing it to run businesses but they could have stopped that in five minutes.
However BT also stopped the service that had been a principle part of their advertising campaign - remember the guy sitting in bed who had 'deleted' all the family photos off the laptop. BT stopped the service and deleted all your backup when they could have just frozen it so you had a couple of years to retrieve the content onto your own raid array. I think they offer a paid service but didn't transfer your storage over, just deleted it.
The local IT pro who looks after the village website (converting from a nice navigable site to one that is style over content) recommended me to Wordpress which can be free if you can adapt their blog oriented template to something sensible. The world does seem to be obsessed by blogs at the moment.
Our club uses 1&1 which is cheaper than Goblowyourmoney  but their website is the most awful and confusing thing ever designed to trick you into getting more than you need.
