ER 32 Collet Problems.
« on: August 06, 2009, 12:32:12 PM »
Anyone else having the same problem as me, with their 7 - 6mm ER32 collet?

3 times now, this 1/4" shanked endmill has gradually worked it`s way out of the collet, to where I don`t want it to be........  :bang:

The only way to keep it in place is to really heave on the C spanner, until the pips squeak. Not my idea of engineering!

All other cutter/ collet combinations seem to be ok......  ::)

Can't say I've had that problem with any ER collets David

Does this partic collet seem on the large side to begin with, ie does it need a lot of tightening to clamp it up?
You will find it a distinct help… if you know and look as if you know what you are doing. (IRS training manual)

I use a ballraced nose nut and it allows a lot more clamp up pressure.

What I would try with yours is to give the nut a good clean out, and put a dab of slideway oil into the groove that the collet locks into. You just might have a little too much friction to give a good clamp pressure.

Hmmm,
Thanks Chaps...... I wonder if the collet is a little oversize? It`s really crushed deep into the taper.
I`ll turn up a 7mm plug gauge.

Never have lubed collet contact areas before, due to swarf sticking. But I`ve often used anti seize compound on the nut threads.
Will give it a go.

You shouldn't have any trouble with the lube David, even the slightest film is better than nothing.

Have you measured the cutter shank BTW? It only needs a tiny taper and it would cause problems.

You have to suspect everything in this game.
