ER 23 Fixture
« on: February 19, 2012, 05:13:19 PM »
Been going to make this for ages
Simply a block with a er32 collet holder on the end
Good for machining flats squares or cross drilling round stock
Rob Wilson gave me a piece of hot rolled square bar .This was hacked in to shape with a fly cutter
Then to the lathe  :dremel: :dremel: :dremel:

It took a while to get it all squared up and running true , this is the back end so was good practice for the nose end

20 mill drill half way through
Bored out until a reasonable finish was ac hived

One thing about getting metal from Rob is that it is shinny on the inside :) :) :)

Nice start John

I've got that on my tuit list as well, together with a hex version too - maybe this century if I can get that Kimble engine finished...

Still drilling holes... Sometimes, in the right place!

Still modifying bits of metal... Occasionally, making an improvement!

That's a nice fixture, John. I could use one of those myself.

Just one point: it looks from the first pic in your last post as though the collet is sitting a bit far back, so that if you tried to clamp it down on the minimum size of stock it will hold, the internal ring in the closing nut might foul the end of the threaded section before the collet gets a grip. An metric ER collet with a clamping range of 1mm needs to have about 4mm of the shallow taper projecting when placed in its chuck (or, in your case, fixture) without being compressed. Easy to fix, of course, by trimming back the front of the fixture.

I've cut the end off it twice, but it's still too short

It is now within a thou all 4 ways
I made a new chuck key for my 4 jaw chuck (i think it is possibly the most accurite chuck key in the world
