Hi Stuart.

These days, H&S would have a field day.......  :palm:

The gas engines. Were there three of them? Each with a lady's name?

Old Gordon, the blacksmith. Who used to live over the fence from me. Told me of the times, as an apprentice. He had to crawl inside the exhaust pipes, to weld patches over the leaks........  :bugeye:

Thanks! Wishing a happy New Year, to You and Yours.......

Yes David no h&s then only came over for a works visit whilst I was doing my time ,
The generators were huge all open frames two cylinder gas engines ,very unnerving standing at the ends with the piston rod cross head coming towards you,

I bet the generators were serviced while running as we did with our converters and alternators ie carbon brushes changed on load / live no need to shut down it was only 220 volts and the Gas engine ones were 2 volts

I cannot remember the names of them

Yes David they where quite a sight and very nearly silent

Well you have jogged my brain cell it was the rotary converters that did the two volts for the salt cells the gas engines were at high voltage thaks for the nudge

At Stanton we used steam turbines for power generation

I've had very little workshop time, these past weeks. But, have made some good, solid progress.

I took the top off the original burner......

And, made a twin wick cap........

The engine then proved to be a willing, steady runner!

The shim valve. When releasing it's pressure, blew onto the flames. Bending them outward.

So, I filed the top edge of the "window", to direct the pressure more upwards.

That's a bit better.......

It's really satisfying, when you begin to understand these engines.

The obligatory video.........

Next job. We need an "eyebrow", to replace the hacksaw blade.

Also, I've noticed the mild steel shutter, is now scuffing the s/s port area. Will swap material, to brass shim........

Thanks for looking in!

I've had very little shop time, recently. Old bones/ cold workshop........  :(

Managed to bend up a s/steel shroud, for the burner flame area.

Then grooved, to give a positive location.......

Set it in place........

And, silver soldered........

Seems to work well.......

Nice, steady running..........

Maybe, a little choked? By the recessed shroud.......

Opened it up, a little.........

That's better!

Realised the valve assembly had settled a little. The shutter was only just covering the ports. Maybe, allowing pressure to exit horizontally, onto the flames.

Tweaked, to give 2mm overlap........

All that was left to do, was to experiment with the wick height, and positioning.

Sorry for the amateur dramatics. But, I was, just a little pleased with the result.........

Still only, loosely assembled, for test purposes. Using undersize c/i piston.

Lots to do yet. But VERY encouraging.

Thanks for looking in!

Wot sorta balls?

A governor?  Nah!

Great improvement David, more than double where you started. Beautiful engine, too.

Thanks Steve!

...........................

Happy with the head etc. I'm turning my attention to the other end, of this engine.

There's something wrong........

It's not the 'orribly designed crank throw. With the big end bearing hanging out in space.   :loco:

It's not the way the crankshaft ball races wobble, in their oversize housing.  :palm:

Shouldn't the flywheel, and cam, bosses, be level with the top of the pedestal casting?

The top of the conrod, is a bit close to the cylinder.........

But, there's rather more clearance, down here.........

It's desaxe! :palm: Don't think that was a design feature!

The eccentrically cast flywheel, reminds me of a loco wheel.......

Would this improve the looks, at all?

Oh. Yes! ........ And, I've got a pair of 'em!

Still have lots of work to do. And, all winter to do it......

I recognise those fly wheels David  :D

As ever a cracking engine rebuild ,good to see your still bringing them back to life .

I will see about doing a few flywheels in cast iron for you ,as I will need something to practice on wile getting to grips with the  cupola  :dremel:

Procrastination....... I think, that's the word...... Putting off, the big decision.

I can't keep on, blaming the cold weather. So, I did a couple of gonna do's. For a couple of weeks.

Then I realised, there's probably some more to come. After some more tweaking.

So, I raised the shutter opening higher, (the shadow, shows the original position), and filed the lip to a knife edge.......

Lowered the rear of the wick tubes........

And...... With the appropriate flame. It worked!

Then, a pal called. With a canyer just?. About a week's work........  :palm:

The extra revs had convinced me. Whatever I do to the crank/ flywheel end, there will be enough power to drive it.

It's time to start, on the big decision!

I need to know the height of the cylinder, from the underside of the base casting.

Don't have a height gauge...... But, this worked!

Two squares. Held square by an engineer's clamp.......

Measure the height, with vernier........

Subtracting, half cylinder o/d, gives centre height. (Some 3mm lower than present crank height).......

Work is progressing again.......

Thanks for looking in!
