64 Plymouth Savoy
« on: November 22, 2014, 01:09:58 PM »
This is another one that I'm doing some intake manifold surgery on. This is a no frills 64 Savoy , radio and heater delete also no back seat from factory. It has a 528 cid Hemisphere with an a 834 4 spd transmission, a Dana 60 rear with 4:11/1 gear. This car is like driving King Kong, however it has some drive ability issues I need to iron out should be fun.

If that was this side of the pond it would be getting an LPG conversion. Forget handling it would not be able to go fast enough to worry about it here.

Well let's just say there's a reluctance to fuel guzzling high emission engines...
I like performance motors as much as the next guy ,but Brussels and the rest of the busy bodies dont like them because of the pollution they cause.....l

Here in the UK the petrol stations are no longer close enough together to drive a car like that :ddb:

I guess things are a little different here , there is a gas station on just about every corner and some times on all four corners in one intersection. Some times when my wife and I are cruising my Chevelle  I can see the soccer moms plugging their noses while driving their Prius behind us , or rolling up their windows to try to escape the noise, it's kind of funny to watch. But that's some of the perks of driving good old AMERICAN MUSCLE .

Well I drive a Prius but I'd be winding down the windows if I saw it :)
This is my other transport

2.2litres and about 500hp.
Do love the sound of American muscle though.

With gasoline (petrol) approaching $2.75 per gallon you can expect more of these muscle cars to come out of hibernation. Does them good to exercise occasionally.

Joe,

..With gasoline (petrol) approaching $2.75 per gallon...

That would be $8.36 at the current Pound Dollar exchange rate.

3.785 Litre at £1.24 per Litre and $1.57 to the £

Now you know why we have to drive Diesels.

So I decided that most of my drivability issues are because the carbs are mounted side ways. I think fuel slosh in the the bowls is the culprit. From the factory they had Carters mounted forwards and no issues. Holleys are not designed to be ran side ways. I machined these plates to turn them 90 degrees and drilled some new mounting holes in the intake manifold, the installation is all most done I'll let you know how it goes .

It has to be said, the mid 1960s really were a high point in US muscle car designs (and, indeed, many of your large sedans as well)... I am still hankering after a nice convertible '65 Lincoln Continental, but they're all so good looking... (well, IMHO anyway).

Mind you, I'd take a "Christine" (1958 Plymouth Fury) as well... especially with that push-button transmission, or a 1977 "batmobile" Trans Am....

Mind you, I just blew all my cash on some British "muscle":

370bhp supercharged V8 :D Just need to take the back silencer boxes off to make it sound a bit more throaty...
Cheers!

Remember your GT40 that the lad had! well he just crapped one of those Jags for the motor for the GT, will let you no when it is running so you can have a look. It is NOT the same car you sold, i think only the chassis rails remain the same :dremel:If my Broadband would run faster than 330k i would put some pics up...maybe in the new year when we are meant to fiber to the house ..

Hi Dave, thanks for showing us, hope your roadtest went well. Just a question - from the first photo it looks like just that one green throttle return spring, are there any more?  In Europe, the criteria for many types of motorsport mean you're unlikely to be allowed through scrutineering (especially if there have been any modifications) unless you have at least two independent positive methods of throttle closure (I've surrendered my International rally licence so haven't got a current MSA 'blue book' or FIA 'yellow book' to get the exact wording) - and that green spring already looks maybe a bit tired?

cheers / Dave M

The spring looks to be "Progressive", wound at different pitches.

And Dave do those seats rotate to assist in entry and exiting? I remember Chrysler offering that feature back around that time. Sure wish they were still offered for those of us that can remember them and now need that feature badly!

Joe

Good evening Gentlemen, I took her for a test drive and let me just say this, the amount of Brute Force and Violence that car now has is incredible. It was pretty good before but now with the double pumpers and mechanical secondaries it is truly unreal. My drive ability issues are a thing of the past, you can actually drive it normally and enjoy it . Jump on the loud pedal and look out . It is really a dangerous fast car . As for the Questions , the seats don't swivel I think the factory was trying to save weight so they kept it bare necessities. There isn't even a back seat.  The throttle spring, you are correct it needs 2 and has 2 I just didn't have it on in photograph . (good eye). And for the automotive pornography , that last pic I posted is a nice look under her dress.......... Just sayin .

Thanx for the interest guys have a good night    Dave .                 (ps those are progressive throttle springs)
