Cutters for Overhead Spindle on Dominion 12" Super Elliot
« on: January 31, 2015, 08:54:39 AM »
Hi everyone

Where can I buy cutter blades for the overhead spindle on my Dominion 12" Super Elliot woodworker.

A web search has failed to tell me where I can buy these items, perhaps I am describing them wrong.

I attach a pic showing one of the pair of cutters I have at this moment, it has a 'Dominion Halifax' stamp on it.

I've never found a source since I've had my machine. A machine did turn up on ebay with a full set but it sold for surprisingly good money. I think manufacture from flatstock is the only real answer as all others I've found have a different retaining shape :(

Thanks Andrew

Maybe someone will come up with a supplier.

Perhaps some form of blank can be shaped to work.

I know that these are not exactly what you're looking for, but when I saw your pic I instantly thought that it looked very like Spindle Moulder Tooling, and I remembered that Axminster used to offer custom cutter profiles http://www.axminster.co.uk/special-profile-knives seems like they still do.

May be of no use, but perhaps there are other companies who will/can make up what you're looking for.

Thanks Tim

What a shame they are not 25mm wide, they would have been perfect.

But perhaps they are the closest I am going to get.

I would have thought that axminster specified that outline to suit the spindle moulders they sell.

I am sure they then send them off to a tool maker to make them. Said toolmakers could make anysize cutters I am sure!

Suggest you talk to Axminster and see if they would accept a different profile or at least give you the contact details of their tool maker.

If not find a tool maker near ou!

It's been a 'back burner' project for me to cut them out on my Fanuc wire EDM machine - they could be cut to profile in the hardened and tempered state just needing final grinding.

It's not very far up the list from the bottom in terms of urgency though  :med:

Thanks guys.

What an obvious solution "go to a toolmaker" I feel a bit stoopid for not thinking of doing that.

I will talk with Axminster but also look locally in my part of the wild north west of England and see if we have any toolmakers.

Again thank you for your help.

Best Regards
Richard

Hi there, all,

Andrew, an academic question: will your EDM machine cut the profile complete with relief?

If so, which do you set over, the cutter blank or the wire?
Best regards,

Pete W.

Pete, it can tilt the wire to +_15 degrees, so the blank says flat, and the upper wire guide moves relative to the lower one. Upper head has axis designated as U & V with the table movements being X & Y.

Andrew,

Many years ago I saw a wire eroded part where one side of the workpiece had an outline of a horse and the other side had the outline of an elephant. I guess a machine to do this had full x/y control of top and bottom wire guides.

What a nice toy to have. I made some form tools from gauge plate for machining some multi tooth pinion cutters. With a wire eroder they could have been in HSS and I could make much smaller ones than I could make with a 0.8mm end mill.

Going back to the original post and Cutters from Axminster - I suspect that 15mm isn't the total width of the cutter - only the width of the cutter that can have a profile cut into it.

This machine is true 4 axis with X Y U & V all being able to be moved simultaneously under G code control.

To be honest I've never played with the 'tilted wire' facility. Programming would be 'interesting' although all the cleaver bits are built into the Fanuc control, including corrections for going round corners etc.

I've wanted in the past to make little 'cracker gifts' where someones christian name is one side and their surname on the other, but never actually tried
