Thanks Joe , Pete and Steve

I need a valve to control the air flow , so I decided to make a butterfly valve  :dremel:

The valve body so far. Machined from a bit mystery steel .

Setting the flat in the correct orientation with the PCD of the slots .

Body done  :dremel:

And a couple of BRASS bushes (not to be confused with Bronzes as that's quite different   :palm: )   for the spindle were machined up and pressed into the body .

I Nickel  plated the valve body to give it some corrosion resistances  :zap:

:) I am sure it works the same Neo  :poke:

Decided to do something different today , so I etched up some name plates to go on the forge and blower , smaller two  are to go on some tooling I have made .

Undecided on weather or not to add a colour infill

I'm running out of things to say. I think a nice bright background colour would be nice. Pick a colour and make it you.   :D

Still room for improvement ,a few things I need to work on ,like were I cut through the plating   , but for now it will do to slap on  the forge

So, which etching method do you use? Is it basically like making PCB boards (shine light through some positive printout, develop with NaOH, then etch with FeCl3 or something like that)?

That's real swish looking. I'll have to have a try at making some plates myself some time. Is it just steel?

Could brick acid be used for etching as that is easily available and pretty cheap ?

It it's the same as muriatic acid (dilute hydrochloric) here I generally use that for cleaning scale and zinc off of steel, but it seems to leave the steel intact. Maybe because it's diluted, or I didn't notice -- even after a couple of mistaken overnight cleanings in it.

It also seems to work well to clean scale off of brazing and copper based parts that I've tried. But again, i didn't notice it eating away the base metal.

It will really tear into zinc, though!

Hi Joules , I used Ferric Chloride (the same gear used to etch PCBs ) , if you have Brick cleaner (usually Hydrochloric acid) to hand then give it ago , it may work .

I forgot -- I have done electrochemical etching of steel  -- to make reed valves for pulsejet engines. Maybe that's a possibility. But i think there'd be some undercutting of the letters if you went anywhere near as deep as Rob has.....
