Now you've got me.  I said "quite a lot" because I don't really know.

I would have thought the ambient temperature above a forge could easily reach 80 deg C, depending on stuff like radiant heat from the hood or duct, conducted heat from duct, airflow over the forge, speed of extractor fan etc.

I'm sure you've got all that stuff worked out, (you normally have), but I'm not sure you can rely on the motor not getting hotter than 65 deg.

I ran a similar external motor exhaust extractor on a 125,000 Btu/hr output wood chip fired furnace with 300 F exhaust temps with no problems.

The fan isn't necessarily located close to or directly over the forge, depending on ductwork from the fan to the hood.

Even if situated directly above, the fan is protected from the radiant heat by the hood and with exhaust extraction, the hot air is going up the duct, not being dispersed around the fan motor.

A large amount of cold air is being mixed with the hot in the hood and duct, as well.

General air circulation in the area around the outside of the duct and hood is very good because of the draw. so external surfaces don't get as hot as might be imagined.

Despite the fact that you can get steel and iron to fusion temps in the forge embers, the total heat output of a forge like this is pretty modest, and also intermittent. Running the forge blower underneath continuously is wasteful of fuel. Usually air is turned down and the fire banked unless actively heating something.

I don't think there's going to be a problem.

(I think I see part of the cause of the confusion --  please note that the motor has been moved out of the venturi, and is external to the intake. This is what makes it an exhaust extractor instead of a blower.)

What Steve said Russell

Thanks for penning that reply Steve      .

At the moment I am still undecided on the ducting arrangement , Mr Hermetic  (Phil)  put using a venturi type hood design into the mix . which possibly if room allows (I am limited to 8 ft  ish ) maybe a better course of action , the fan then  could run/function normally ,no Wilson mods lol.

I also should point out I have 5 of these fans to play with , and if I was to come across a better motor I would  change it . all that could be done at a latter date .

Another possibility Andrew

You could always remotely couple the fan and motor using a pulley v belt drive assembly, but then it starts to grow arms and legs...but least ways the motor is out of the 'Red Area' as Dale would say......

I have at least ten vices! Three of them are leg vices, another three are tool makers vices!

I should qualify! Regards, Matthew.

Nice Rob, they look good and stout

Are they for permanent installation or will they be moved about? If the later I suggest a couple of finger recesses or you'll never get a grip on them to pick them up

Hi Rob , nice job there, they look like tey will stand the test of time ok. Did you use your new plasma cutter to cut the parts out ? Does it leave good enough finish to weld without much grinding ?
 Cheers Mick
