I like the extendable arm Rob. Looks good. That forge is going to turn into a heirloom piece.

Thanks Eric ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,is yourlass still enjoying forging ?

That she is. She just finished up another class. Got her registered for 2 more, including a workshop on building a gas forge and intermediate joinery. Trying to get her into a Damascus knife making class. Waiting for them to offer another...

Rob, looks good. Is the double joint in the arm to allow it to fully fold up or was it just a more convenient way of making the joint?
Looking forward to the next installment!

I wish there were classes like that near me Eric ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Damascus /pattern welded steel is something I would also like to try my hand at   :dremel:  , what classes are you enrolled in ?

needle point and baking  :)

Hi Andrew , you got it the double joint makes it fold flat and gives a lot more range over its 30" reach . Here is a better shot of it folded out of the way .

Decided to clean the shop up a bit today and make a lever for the butterfly valve .

Yeah... You would think right? Her and I have had this discussion because they have a light metals class or two (jewelry making) that I wouldn't mind taking.

One thing I have learned about a lady blacksmith. Don't argue with her... she carries a hammer.

And a wee bit more done  :dremel:

I remembered that I had not finished the motor/fan mount , so added a cross member and a rubber foot .

The rubber foot just sits on the cross member so the unit is free to float  .

Then I decided I would do something with the ash dump , I cut a section out of the tube and  re welded it ,I also turned down the flange .

With the end being angled forwards it gives more room for a bucket , just need to come up with a flappy thing to cover the end .

Pretty soon you will run out of parts to make and improvements to apply, and will
actually have to FORGE something :whip:

Well I made some progress with the ash dump flap today  :dremel:

I reused  the material from the not so good flap , yes I could just cut a new bit but why waste materials .

Just need to stick a handle /lever on it  :dremel: , now its pie and chips time . ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,or maybe toad in the hole

Cheers Rob

I decided to have  toad in the hole for tea  :D

Bent up a handle from 20mm bar  ,two actually did not like the first design .

Bobs bending pins (made about 20 years ago )  :dremel:

First handle ,the  one I did not like the look of it for this job .

so I bent up another on other end of the bar .

and welded to flap .

A bit clean up here and there and thats that for the bottom part , hood tomorrow   :ddb:

Cheers Steve   , have made any progress with your lathe build ?

Well today did not go to plan , I was planning on doing the hood today but it has rained hard all day , I have to cut the 8x4 sheet up outside .

So I stripped the forge and cleaned up the stand ,finished the welding and removed the weld splatter .

And a group shot of parts made so far

Hopefully the weather at the weekend will be better .

Pretty!

Rob I have not done a thing on the lathe since the weather warmed up.  :palm: No metal at all. Been cutting wood and building bows and arrows and target shooting. Once snow flies I'll be back indoors.

Hi Steve , looking forward to seeing you back on with  your lathe build  , its been snowing here  :(

Well I managed to get a wee bit of work done on the forge hood , I am using 1mm galvanized sheet steel to make the hood .

My state of the art sheet metal folder ,

A length of 50x50 and 60x25 flat bar LOL , does the job one day I may make something better .  :dremel:

And thats as far as I got this afternoon , just tack welded with the old MIG .  :zap: I will seam welded it when I get the last section  in .

Cheers Rob

Nice hood Rob, and very authentic looking too! I have a very similar metal folder to you, I have a bench about 6ft long wirh a similar vice at either end, and when I fitted the vices I put a bit of angle iron in both to make sure they were in line. Now I trap the steel I want to bend between two pieces of angle iron, and fold away! You can use a pair of mole grips to give extra clamping force if you don't need all the length.
Phil

Hi Phil

I was just thinking about adding a folder attachment to the welding bench , so many projects lol , I am still undecided on the hood extraction . I may go for your suggestion of a venturi type hood .

Cheers Rob
