Just bought a lathe... hurrah!
« on: February 28, 2015, 04:58:21 AM »
Hello Everybody, what a great site!
My name is Jon and in my mid life crisis I have bought an unused Warco 918 lathe for £625.00 with a Warco metal stand, 3 and 4 jaw chucks, steadies, face plate, live centre and a ton of tools. Now I need to work out how to degrease and get it running sweetly. I have a feeling I may be hanging around this site bugging the life out of the knowledgeable  ones. (see my first question below) Be gentle now

Hi Jon, welcome!

If you don't have any, a couple of lathe books might be helpful.

I liked the reprinted 1942 South Bend "How To Run A Lathe" manual from Lindsay Books when I first started out, and the Sparey book "The Amateur's Lathe" has come highly recommended here as well (though my reprint copy has really poor photos in it).

I love it when a Plan B comes together!

Hi Jon

Welcome to the forum, and good luck with the lathe. An exciting time for you.

                                                                 Cheers David

Hello and welcome.

Being a bit of a beginner myself I can vouch for the unstinting help that is on offer. (Is that OK guys, £££ in a plain envelope addressed to ....).

My kids don't believe we used to pay for stuff with pound notes. "don't you mean pound coin dad?"

Some of us could only manage a 10 bob note. Anything more had to wait for the next pay day ... :(

I have a few modest talents. Knowing what I'm doing isn't one of them.

Ahh a weeks pay one large white five pond note as big as a napkin ,anything more and they used to keep it back till next week mind you you had to put in 80 hours to get that , a bit before my time although first pay packet was £4 12shillings and 6 pence

Anyway welcome can I repeat never leave the chuck key in the lathe unless you have your hand on it same goes for drill chuck keys ( when the chuck guss rand ) tail stick chuck are ok

Have fun and expect to have empty pockets as you need this and that
