Samsung Galaxy tab3 lite.
« on: April 16, 2015, 02:02:27 PM »
My wife bought me one of these tablets for Christmas. As is usual these days it came with only the absolute minimum of instructions. Basically just how to switch it on.

For further help it referred me to the Samsung web site ( www.samsung.com) where the user manual was to be found.

I can't find any reference to user manuals on the site.

Can any one who has one of these tablets tell me how to get to the manual ?

I am not a tablet person and do not find them at all intuitive.

Dave.

Feeling old today. :(

Was trying to use a Windows phone a week or so ago, looking for the camera feature and man it made me feel out of touch. It all looks very nice but I think they considered the aesthetics before the functionality.

Still using the old Nokia 1110. Had it for 10 years, it's been dropped and thrown many times. Even fell down a 5 story stairwell shaft once. Nokia used to build some beautiful phones. But really I just like buttons, and they don't make smartphones with buttons any more.

I did get given a Samsung smartphone about a year ago. Spent a while trying out different Android programs and the ones that seemed like they were almost worth a damn were all designed to work on tablet sized screens. Didn't get much use out of it before it packed in though.

I hate the tablets and smart phones. Did anybody think the old user interface. Old Nokias used to be nicely build and too a lot of abuse. I know I kept all my phones on pokets on any trouser I used to have. I liked the user interface it was logical and consistent, then came greed, Elop and MS and all went on hell.

My daugher likes Smansungs, mechanically not as sound as Nokias (I talking 4 years and older) and you can do same thing many ways, there are settings everywhere and you can adjust settings everywhere, but it works and when I compared few yars back Smamsung Kies that did the work and nokias three different software to move calendar, messages, content and phonebook from E-nokia to year newer Lumia I could not get it work. No-one did, not even tech support. Too many indian SW specialist.

My daughter bought first Samsung calaxy tab when she learned to read and latest one she did all settings on her own. I only taught her SIM-cards complications and WIFI setting two years back and she knnows it not.

That said the manual is abysmal if you know something about IT, but you are not used to these dumb "smart" devices and their idosyncracies. If you get stuck, just google plain english sentence that first comest to mind (omitting the few letter words) someone has done the tutorial how to make something work in totaly foreign logic.

The tablet does give a site address for the instructions.  But when tried it tells me that it is not accessible from the wifi link. and directs me to the Samsung home site ;  which is less than helpful.

Seems strange to me,  who was brought up with computers that came with half a dozen mock-leather bound instruction manuals,  that you can buy a (more or less) state of the art machine and have to go searching for instructions on how to use it. Quite literally the little book that comes with it only tells you how to connect the charger and turn the machine on.  That's it.

I also was quite happy with my old Nokia phone. But my wife bought me a Blackberry Curve a couple of years ago. I resisted using it for over a year.

I don't text.  And have some very good cameras if I want pictures.

Also I have to put on my reading specs to properly see the text on the screen; and the keys.

Ah, such is progress.

Progress with the cellphones? New ones don't fit into pocket, needs charging EVERY day, lasts about two years (max) and are host of vacuous programs that try to pry out your personal information and sell it. Also it does not fit on hand and really can't be used as a phone. Some  say they use it for work, biggest function is called "Forward" they should make it really big fat finger button green button and call it "project manager toolbox". I use camera, I own several of them, never took a picture with cellphone. If I feel that I need to type something I use keyboard and will not take "touchcreen". I don't use hammer as a screwdriver and I don't use cellphone for other than text/call.

Did you read all those consents and licence agreements and all? Basically I will never buy a produt which has dragonian and longer conditions than manuals. Setup would be ready fairly fast, but if you really read all small text it will take best part of the day. And you can't use the damn hing for anything unless you consent to give your liver and rights away pretty much for nothing. E.U. really should regulate the lisence junk consumers are put trough. E.G. 1 page of legal jargon per 1000 - 10000€ of product price or somehing. Ridiculous. I bought my house and agreement was totaly four pages! Now smart phones have legal burlup for nearly hundred pages and we are supposed to go troug that for a few hundred toy.

I'm gona be one crumpy sod.

I use a samsung tablet that I carry around with me for my daily trips to denny's for coffee (free wifi there) mind you I have had the internet at home since 92 or so. I enjoy the fact that so much info and video's like Doubleboost's are available and can keep a eye on the stock's I have but I don't type on it too often.  As far as being tracked, they always have been able to track us and have (like the smart television that hears every word said ) I havn't heard anything about that since it was reported. It seems everyone is so eager to jump on google, facebook or any other sites where is is done openly and they tell you what they are tracking and why, I would be more worried about the ones that don't tell you that may not be regulated!

Dave

I have owned a Nexus 7 tablet Android " Google product" for a year now and absolutely love it. the User Interface with the computer is strikingly different to the regular PC set up,  once mastered is quicker than any pc.

The nomenclature is different but the tablet does exactly the same as a pc plus more.

I am a Mechanical project manager and spend 50% of my time on the shop floor problem solving, I have a need to have my electronic library in my pocket for instant reference and tablets fill this need perfectly.

In my tablet i have a mirrored  copy of my pc files all of which can be accessed, edited and added to, it reads PDF, Excell, Word, One Note I even have a CAD program on it.

I have a cloud account with Google to which i use for sharing and storage while not at my desk, this week I fly to London so while i am there I have my complete work hard-drive  already there.

For my personal use, it has enhanced my time and knowledge in my work shop, I have my sketches of projects right there in the shop for reference, i take notes and pictures on projects, I have tap, drill, dovetail calculator and speed charts on it, I listen to music, it even acts a screen display for the DRO on my mill when i finally hook it up, and another handy feature is my wife emails me when its time for dinner.

APPS are the way to go, they are quick and efficient and do just one thing and do it well, plus they are cheep.

The cloud feature is not fully recognized yet by people of our level and is underused, but people are wary of it for privacy issues wrongly so in my opinion, I look at it this way, if your that stupid to put any information on a cloud system " or the Internet in general"  that you do not want people to see you deserve to be burned.

Google is sucking up all internet information and storing it for profit, yet its a wonderful resource we all use, yet the concept of recording information on mass, storing it and using it for profit goes back 900 years "Google" the Manga  Carta, them cats back then wanted there tax revenue brother.

To sum up, Study your tablet, get used to using the stylus for the interface fingers don't work, Get "Google Keep", its a note taking app, simple but very powerful, but most of all enjoy your technology and make it serve you to make you happy.

All the best

Anthony.

Anthony,

Nice piece.

Those are the reasons that I was expecting my Tab3 to be more useful than it is turning out to be.

But I think that the problems I am having with it,  or should I say why I see it so negatively,  is that it is really not necessary to my life style.
I would find myself making uses for it that I don't actually need.
Guess I am an awkward old coot. But over the last few years I find myself trying to simplify life rather than complicate it. Mind you,  I'm 71 soon so I'm all for an easier life.

They are a marvelous bit of kit. No doubt about it.  But I can work much better with my laptop and radio mouse than I ever could with a touch screen.

And not only will it not fit in my pocket,  but sadly, carrying anything of this nature in view greatly increases you chances of getting robbed.

I will keep tinkering with it. But I do wish she had bought me a pair of slippers instead.

Dave.

I'm with Pekka.

I don't even own a cellphone any more.

Don't need it now, and also I'll just wait a few years. We won't need them at all when Google really comes up to speed and there are mikes and cameras on every person and every square inch of the planet with drones overhead. You'll just speak out the name of the person you want to talk to, wait to get through the commercial messages, give some juicy piece of personal history for payment, and get connected. Woohoo!

I for see the rise of 'pizza drone piracy'.

People will build little transmitters that over ride the pizza delivery drone's instructions cause it to divert to the 'pirate'.  Free pizza !

First time one flies into a plane will see the rapid demise of the private drone.

Here is a chance for for someone to make a fortune.

Write an Application that enables you to use a radio mouse with a touch screen tablet.

Dave.

p.s.  Remember the old song 'Touch screen killed the radio mouse ?
