I have heard that these are the Rolls Royce of three jaw chucks and I can see that the clamping force is likely to be more even along the length of the jaw, but are there more jaws for gripping tube from the inside?

Russell
Common sense is unfortunately not as common as its name suggests.

No because they were very expensive you bought  the other jaws as a extra they also came with two year warranty  these are only jaws for this chuck.  info supplied by UK lathes

I have one of these chucks with both sets of jaws for my Raglan lathe. It's a good chuck but a bit heavy putting it on and off the lathe. Apparently because of the sloping design of the jaws it is possible to grip material with just the jaws and the scroll. I've seen a photo but can't find it now as evidence.

The Edgwick has three studs, to fit this heavy chuck you need a lathe hook which makes it easy and with one of those engine cranes you lift the chuck and slide it on and tighten the nuts, the hook is easy to make   tomorrow I take some pictures of the one I made and post it. David

Nice chuck! These were indeed designed to take all of the clamping force in the jaws & scroll - there's a picture on lathes.co.uk somewhere showing one of these "body off" clamped around a tube, to prove that the body was only there to keep everything in more or less the right place.

Outside jaws were available (£££ extra), as were soft jaws.
Cheers!
Ade.

This chuck was in a wooden box I don't think it was used much the former owner used the four jaw chuck he bought the lathe in about 1936 in Adelaide
