Tom,

Yes I did.  And in the boot.  Nothing.

I'm going out into the shed soon to light the stove and have another look.

Dave.

Found them.

In the shed on a shelf. partially hidden by a piece of equipment.

Now all I have to do is fit them.

Great fun on a cold day in March.

 Jeff,

I'm using XP.

The Search facility in Windows Explored has an option to

'Search hidden files and folders' in the advanced search area.

Hope this helps.

Dave.

Not Windows fault (at least on this occasion) but the application / app designer's fault.

The App might default to saving there - if so that's rather bad design; you should never actually ever save anything you want there - that's in Windows volatile "Temp" storage - and well-behaved apps are meant to clean up anything they park in Temp when the application exits (and Windows will periodically clean-out any detritus that apps leave behind in Temp).  No user should ever have to go and do anything in Temp - and that's one of the reasons its hidden.  The reason you couldn't find it is possibly because the app had done as it was supposed to and deleted it when it exited!

but which Dr Who is driving it?

I found old carpet stops stuff rolling too far and minimizes damage to tools.

I also got one of these extending magnet gadgets with a built in torch for $2 and that at least gives me a chance! If that fails the Cree torches with zoom function give LOADS OF LIGHT to allow you to curse in comfort when you can't reach it.

Spent ages once looking for v small screw which dropped onto floor. Magnets, torch, small children all deployed to no avail. Then looked in trouser turn up - bingo.

A little aside on the bearings I 'lost'.

On Sunday I set about fitting one side.

I don't have a press so I was committed to driving out the old bearing with a drift.

It was tight. So I was really laying into it when there was a sharp pain and blood was squirting everywhere.

And I do mean spurting. It was apparently coming from the little finger of my right hand; the one holding the hammer.
Problem was my hands were really black and oily. so first job is to clean them.
The sink was soon a bloody, oily mess as I had to wring my hands together to get the dirt away.
Got the hands clean and began looking for a huge laceration.
Blood still running, but can't find a cut.
Then found a tiny pin hole in the finger less than a millimeter wide.
Nothing in the hole. I couldn't believe so much blood could come from so small a wound.

Anyway my daughter taped it up and we went back out to finish the job.

I never found out where the shrapnel came from.

David, could it be that the head of your drift was mushroomed? Though how it flew from there to your little finger on the hammer handle I am at a loss as the forces should be downward. BUT, swarf and chips do amazing gymnastics at times.

Tape up and keep going sounds like a commitment to the project at hand.

John,

The drift head was the thing I suspected.  But it was ok, I'm careful to remove any mushrooming.

I think the bit must have bounced back from somewhere.

Do you remember the inimical Daniels from The Salvager ?

His motto was 'the only way to get a job done is to do it'.  And the bearing had to be changed. So, tape it up and think of England.

Years ago - decades ago - I used to walk from the Tube station to the Polytechnic where I was studying my 'A' levels, and it took me past a tool dealer - not absolutely sure but I think that it was a Buck & Hickman's. In the window they had a display of Moore & Wright measuring tools, and nestled in the middle was a No. 800 Thread Pitch gauge - the sort that folds out with lots of blades like a pen knife.

I coveted that gauge. I looked daily, and kept saying that I couldn't afford it - I was 16 at the time and funds were practically non existent  :(

Well one day I bought it - can't remember how I managed it, but I had it in my pocket for days

Now that was 50 years ago, and I've used that gauge regularly measuring Imperial threads ever since - more recently (probably 15 years ago) I got a Metric version, but it's only Draper and nothing like the quality but it does the job.

On Monday I was using the M&W 800 - used it several times - I know EXACTLY where I was using it (at the lathe and at my bench) - went to get it out of the drawer on Tuesday - gone, vanished not a trace or even a note to say goodbye  :bang:

Since then I've turned the workshop upside down, the bench has never been more tidy, the lathe and it's surroundings have been given a spring clean, but no, not a trace, not a sign, nothing.

So rather reluctantly I've ordered another identical one on eBay, but I have an odd feeling of being disloyal  :med:

... so how long before the original comes back from it's travels, and settles back into it's comfortable lined drawer

Well that didn't take too long  :ddb:

I keep my measuring tools in an office type 5 drawer Bisley A4 unit. It occurred to me that it was entirely possible that when I closed the top drawer where they are kept, the gauge had been pushed 'over the top' and fallen behind the other drawers.

So, take the top drawer out, then the next etc and lo and behold 'down the back' were all sorts of lost goodies including a brand new 'Zeus' reference booklet that I'd not seen for weeks - BUT NO THREAD Gauge  :bang:

As I put the drawers back and got to the top one, hey, what's THAT jammed up in the fold that forms the side of the drawer? Yes, my poor innocent thread gauge - it hadn't been out on the town partying, it was where is should have been all the time. Ironic - I'd completely emptied the drawer searching previously, but as I'd not removed it I'd not seen it at the angle that revealed the stuck thread gauge

Andrew,

It just shows that the fastest way to find a lost tool is to order a new one.

Works every time.

Having just ordered a new set of CK folding Allen keys to replace my 'misplaced' ones, I am hoping a little bit of your majic rubs off on me!

Andrew

are you sure SWMBO had not ,as part of a diabolic plan, carefully relocated it temporarily? "workbench never looked so clean" - always a bad move to let 'em see that. Gives them as sorts of ideas about tidiness being next top godliness ( see the irish dictionary for relevant entries ).

Glad it turned up eventually.

As a first aid  aside - always useful to have some 'steri-strips"in the workshop first aid kit . Pressure stops the bleeding and the steri strip binds the skin flap down.

Ian,

25 mm masking tape works pretty well as a temporary blood stop

Managed to gash a knuckle with a Stanley knife this morning - got a first aid kit in the workshop, but no way can you get those silly modern sealed elastoplasts open with blood all over the place  :bang:

A turn of masking tape round the affected digit stemmed the flow, and when clotting started a more conventional fix could be applied

I just hold a cigaette paper on it the bleeding stops and dries and forms a second skin that washes away later

Well I don't smoke, but I keep cigarette papers in the workshop for 'touching off' on the surface grinder. A small piece is moistened with saliva and stuck on the work. Then bring the wheel down gently until the paper is wiped off and you know exactly how close you are to the work.

Trouble is the wife steals them to clean the reeds of her Oboe mouthpiece
