2-6-0 Mixed Trafic Tender Locomotive
« on: February 09, 2016, 02:43:50 AM »
Its been some while since I started a thread, but I haven't been idle. Since getting my Simplex in Steam and doing a little tidying up work on it I've been pondering what to take on as my next long term project. I have the fancy to doing a larger tender loco, I dropped on a set of Don Young drawing for his 5" Gauge 2-6-0 Horwich Mogul otherwise known as a Crab due to its appearance. Don's drawings are beautifully detailed and have many of the features of the full sized engine, but her I hit a problem, I'm not that bothered about it being an exact scale model as long as it looks ok when its over on the far side of the track I will be happy I'm more interested in its ease of manufacture, and it being a good runner. So I will be using Dons drawings only as a guide, and will be redesigned it extensively to make it easier to make:- her are my objectives and list of constraints for the design.

Objectives:-

1:- 5" Gauge Miniature Locomotive
2:- Good Reliable Runner
3:- Extensive use
4:- Haul a minimum of 8 people
5:- Resemble a 2-6-0 Horwich Crab

Constraints:-

1:- All Features to be functional and relevant to use of a Miniature Locomotive
2:- Minimum of cast parts
3:- Make Maximum use of Don Young's design
4:- Maximum Use of laser cut parts
5:- Maximum use of commercially supplied Items (Boiler and Fittings)
6:- Simple Construction
7:- Simple and easy to maintain
8:- Transport by one person

So there we have it:-

Every project has to start some ware so I decided to start with the cylinders as I thought this would be the most difficult part to make and if I couldn't make them there was no point in taking it any further. I didn't wont to use castings I wanted to make them from a billet of cast iron, this called for a redesign of Don Young's drawing. I kept all the main critical for function features:- over all length valve ports cylinder piston valve relationship etc, but reduce the cylinder diameter to 1 3/4" 45mm and simplified other features so that it could be made from billet.

Progress to date:-

Cutting the meehanite cast iron billet to size.

I then roughed it out on the mill and finished square using an angle plate

spotted out the cylinder and valve position using the mills DRO and located in large four jaw using a wobble bar.

Roughed out the bores.

And then set up on the cross slide and using a between centre boring bar finished the bore.

First bore done only another three to go.

That's as far as I've got.

I'll keep you posted as things progress.

I like your idea the cylinder castings from Reeves are £367.06 , will be watching at 72" long not so small .

Reminds me I really do need to make progress with my Fowler 4F.

The cylinder (inside twin) will also be hewn from the solid.

Looking forward to seeing more of your project.

Dave.

Thanks for looking chaps

I like your idea the cylinder castings from Reeves are £367.06 , will be watching at 72" long not so small .

I bought all the bar material to make both cylinders including covers, piston, valve sleeves and valve spool for £160 so I recon I've saved myself a nice bit of cash, to be honest I think what they charge for castings is extortionate. On the down side there is quite a bit of machining to get them where I want, but on the plus side the continuous meehanite is lovely to machine, free of blow holes and hard inclusions, and once you have the billet for the cylinders squared up its a lot easier to handle than an odd shaped casting, I won't round the outside up until I have all the rest of the features machined.

I'm just going to take it one part at a time, my first hurdle is the cylinders, its pushing the capacity of my machine, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I'll keep you posted with updates, so watch this space.

Wow!  That's looking great.  Keep up the good work, and keep the pictures coming.

Just to get a sense of the scale of the project, what is the size of your lathe?

Well its been a busy summer I've been beavering away on this project as well as running my Simplex Loco I recon I've clocked up about 250 miles on it, any way I thinks I'm well over due for giving you guys an up date, I'll probably spread it over a couple of post as I've made a fair bit of progress.

Valve sleeve

Spool Valve

Piston Rings

Valve Cover

Guide bar bracket

Family Picture

I've got the frame built and the cylinders mounted I'll show pictures of this in the next instalment.

Stew',

Nice to see you are making progress.

I have just (last night) made a start on machining the wheels for my Fowler 4F. I must post some pictures and bring the thread up to date.

Must remember to charge the camera batteries this time.

Dave.

Thanks for your comments chaps

Her's a few more in process shot build:-

The horn blocks were made from the off cuts of the cylinders

The frames were Laser cut the horns were screwed in place and the frames bolted back to back and the horns milled out so that everything lines up

The horizontal streachers were just 3/8" black plate the vertical streachers were laser cut fabrications silver soldered together.

Drag Beam was also a LASER cut fabrication silver soldered together.

Hers a few shots of the assembly so far

I've now made a start on the wheels axles and axle boxes I'll up date you when they are done.

Cheers

A quick aside re rules (scales to our American and European colleagues).

Some time back at work I was having problems getting some 'rule size' cutting jobs the right length.

It turned out that one of the staff had clipped the end of the rule while measuring a job in the bandsaw.

So he ground off 1/8" from the damaged end. And didn't tell anyone.

Hi Cris
The radius profile is just for appearance the cylinders will function just as well if they were left square. So all I did was to mark the radius on the end face and roughed them out with a series of flats with an end mill then blended them in with a file they didn't need any more than that.

Cheers Stu, fully understood it was appearance only but they look lovely. So they were hand filed. Jeeez.... I need to practice more!! Excellent work (but as I`ve said for many years, sod the engines and build a clock!  :) - you`d make a bloody brilliant clock )

I look forward for the next instalment.

Thanks for your interest

I,ve just completed machining the wheels: I was given a set of casting by a friend, some one had made a start of machining them the outside face had been machined up and the hole for the axle had been machined, some had the back face cleaned up, and all had the back hub face machined, but the hole was too big and the hub face was to thin meaning the rim of the wheel would rub on the frame. A set of unmachined casting will set you back about £200 so it is well worth the effort to recover them.

First job was to fit a bush with a flange to the bores fixed in place with high strength loctite and a small grub screw fitted down the joint.

That should keep it in place.

Next job was to set the wheel up in my four jaw chuck clock the dia of the bush up true and tap the back face of the wheel up against the face of the chuck, to do this I had to put some packing on the jaws in the shape of some small button magnets.

With a boring bar to get every thing running true rouch the bore out and finish off to size with a reamer

Face up the new hub to give the correct stand out, face the rim to the correct thickness and turn the dia for the flange to size.

I have a 300mm old fasion  vernier to measure the rim, the price was right and it does the job

To machine up the front face I used my home made face plate that I made a few uears ago from a disc of steel donated by bluechip, so that I could clamp down on the rim I used two way tape to stick four washers to the plate and I screwed a mandrell into the centre.

Turned the mandrell up for a nice push fit on the bore.

Rough out the out the wheel tred dia and flange thickness

With a radius tool finish off the dia and flange thickness

Using the same mandrell as for the face place mount it on the mill and clock the mill up on it zero the DRO and move the off set for the the crank pin and lock the table up.

Drill and ream for the crank pin:- its important that the off set is exactly the same for each wheel so once you've done one don't move any thing.

Thats it all done

That saved me £ 200

 :D :D :D :D

Nice wheels,

My procedure for machining the wheels for my 0-6-0 was very similar. The main difference was that I built a jig to hold them and clamped it on the faceplate.

Mine are really only temporary as they don't have the required number of spokes.

Good job; keep it going.

Dave.

Thanks for your interest Dave you were the only one to reply so I guess your the only one watching.

Any way

Hi Chaps:- if any one does read it.

I've not updated this thread for a while I did get distracted with a couple of other projects and I was a bit put off from updating it because of the problems I was having with photobucket, but now that I've gone add free its making the process far easier.

I have done some work on it and I'm planning too have a intense period of activity on it.

So her's the update

The main driving axles are made fro 3/4" ground mild steel bar, the first job was rough cut them to length.

Face them all off so that they were all exactly the same length.

Using a collett centre drill.

Then between centres turn down the end for a nice close fit in the wheels

I then drill down the ends and cross drilled oiling way this way to oil the bearing all I have to do is squirt oil down the centre of the axle. sorry no pictures of this.

Next turn up and fit the driving pins for the wheels and loctite them in the wheels

Axle boxes Made from a chunk of cast iron

1st job square the chunk up to size

Cut each axle box off from the chunk

In the four jaw face off to length.

Then in the mill I found the centre of each box and put in a centre drill, and using a woble bar centred the box back up in the four jaw and drill out and reamed 3/4"

Then turned up  3/4" mandrell

Transferred  the chuck over onto the spin indexer and milled the groove for a nice slide fit on the frame hornblocks this way every thing will be concentric keeping the axle boxes in line.

Radius off the groove this is so the axles will roll on the track curve and humps and bumps.

This is the axles and axle boxes assembled with the springs.

Then using a quartering jig assemble the wheels:- its important for the wheel coupling that each set of wheels are quartered exactly the same

I post a picture of the wheels in the frame at a later dat.

I'm currently building the pony truck this is being fabricated from laser cut parts.

Hi Stew,

David's not the only one watching..... I just don't often comment (probably should really).

It's a great looking build so far, surprisingly complicated things, these steam engines! Are you making your own boiler, or getting a commercial one? Oh, and nice fix on those wheels BTW. You make it look and sound so simple, I'd be swearing and cursing after the 2nd one I bet.

Looking forward to the next installment!
Cheers!

I too, like to watch these sorts of things in progress. The main problem is that if one clicks 'notify' then all the people who comment nice job etc, get 'notified' too. Those sorts of messages, I feel, detract from the main thread of interest. Personally I try and wait until the end before commenting. But the hapless contributor thinks they be being ignored, but I would hazard a guess that is not usually the case.
Now if there was a Like button or similar that did not interfere with the thread as such...if only...
There, I have gone a broke my own 'rule' now.

No I'm getting a boiler made by Western Steam it shoul be ready this September.

Yes the hornblocks they are square, made from the off cut material from the cylinders, waste not want not, but there is nothing new about having them way LBSC used this method from time to time.

The lathe is a Chester Model B a 3 in 1 with the mill drill head removed, cheep and nasty but its done everything I want in the last 8 years, its got a huge swing which is very useful at times. It doesn't have a gear box as such, the speed is changed with a belts and pulleys.

Ah, that explains the headstock arrangement - it was the lever on the front behind the chuck that threw me.

You do some very fine work on it for a 'cheap and nasty' machine - just goes to show its the craftsman not the tool that makes the job :)

 Stew',

Just a comment.   There has been a crab running on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway for the past few days. In the same livery.  And a very impressive loco it is.  I do remember these from my days as a trainspotter, long before the word was a derogatory term.
Yesterday, as I was driving through town there was a wide load procession of low loaders and police escort vehicles heading towards Howarth.  So I am assuming the loco has moved on.

By the way, where did you get the wheel castings from ?

Nice work.  Picking up some handy tips.  The cylinders are gorgeous.  I'm following your technique (when the time comes)

Thanks, Bob

Time for another update:-

Things gave moved on a pass. the frame is assembled and the wheels are in and the pony truck is completed and in the frame, I'm taking her to the track next week to push her round the bends to check that the pony truck works.

And a few in-process shot of the pony truck made from laser cut parts silver soldered together.

The centralising spring

I think its about time I post an update of progress so far.

I've been slowly beavering away at the build except for a few small tooling projects just as a change. I've got the slide bars and cross head made and I'm making the valve linkage at the moments I did buy a set of laser cut linkages but I didn't like the way you have to fabricate the forked ends so I'm making them out of solid so that they can be case hardened.

The motion plate is made from a laser cut part with the edge fluting milled in the same as for the radius Link Bracket that's shown her clamp roughly in place as a trial fit it won't get fitted till I have the rest of the valve links fitted so that it can be correctly placed.

And I've recently taken delivery taken delivery of the Boiler from Western Steam and I must say they've made a lovely job of it with great service.

Any way her's a few photos.

I also was wondering about the pics.

Do you know what this loco is going to weigh when it is finished ?

Thanks for your interest Chaps,

Sorry about the pics, one reason I haven't posted earlier is that I got really brassed off with photobucket since they've been run by a bunch of greedy managers so I stopped taking pictures, I've since decided to try another hosting provider (imgur) and i'm only just getting to grips with there system, they posted fine on the Model Engine Maker forum but for some unknown reason they cam out large on this forum.

I also was wondering about the pics.

Do you know what this loco is going to weigh when it is finished ?

Dave.

Sorry Dave I have no idea but I think it will be more than a one man lift, as I struggle to lift the boiler on its own.

Didn't work for me, but a left click on picture then Control with a minus(-) sign did. Then Control with  a plus (+) sign, to revert to submitted size.

it's very much browser dependent.

That's why posting at 800x600 is a good choice

Hey Stew I'm here I too done post comments as often as I should.
I suspect I'm not the only one my current little build and I mean little compared to this has gone from start to finish with very few comments. So at least I hope someone got something out of my posts.

Anyway your build has been awesome so don't stop keeping us updated. You have totally amazed me. I would love to be able too do a build like this but I would not know where to start!!

Doc, Stew,

I too am guilty of not posting many comments - it doesn't mean to say I'm not interested or appreciative of your posts - I really enjoy them. Doc - you amaze me with your productivity - goodness knows how many projects you'll complete when you're retired. If I thought I could offer any constructive comments I would but you obviously know what you're doing and I can't add anything.

My thanks go out to all the MadModders who contribute.

Cheers.

Phil.

Just to give you some idea of the work involved in making the valve linkage.

This is the radius link

Square up a length of mild steel, and drill the holes and corner position and then chew out the material not wanted

And these are the finished links you can see where they go on the full size picture

I've just achieved a significant milestone with this build in that I've just got it running on air

  :D

Its runs a little lumpy because I only roughly centred the valves by eye and I had left some of the brackets lose so things should get better . I've still got to make the radius link to complete all the motion works but I'm very pleased that I've reached this important milestone.

Well done, its great to see movement after a long time of metal bashing.

It was very satisfying to see my Rob Roy 0-6-0 chassis running on air in 1990. Unfortunately its still packed away from when I moved to Ireland in '91

One day!!

At least I have a access to as few hectares of rugby club for the track!!

Well I guess its about time I updated you on the progress of this project I'm sorry I've been a bit lacks in posting but I've had a few health issues:- I was diagnosed with prostrate cancer 12 months ago they told me it was curable, its was found by chance as I had no obvious symptoms, we had a friend diagnosed with it, and my wife persuaded me to attend a walk in screening session held locally just to get checked out. I was devastated by the news it really knocked me back. Needless to say our NHS has been absolutely fantastic and before long i found myself on hormone treatment, and I elected to be treated with Radio therapy that I completed at the end of February. I got over this treatment well and now have to wait 6 months for thing to settle down before testing to see how effective the treatment was so I'm keeping my fingers crosses, in the meantime I,m staying positive.

Any way to the project update, once I'd tested the running gear on air I then got stuck in on the tender and completed it last December this is it:-

And this is the progress with the Loco I've completed and fitted the smoke box smoke box door and chimney

I hope you can see the images I'm a little rusty posting

The loco is now looking more complete, with the added length of the smokebox assembly.
The tender looks great too, in it's black, lined livery. Well done!

So sorry to hear of your prostate problems.

A couple of years ago, I was grateful to hear. "Well..... It's not cancer".... As he had his camera inserted in my microbore plumbing system.

He prescribed, finasteride.
My prostate took almost 6 weeks to self destruct, to normal size.
Normal plumbing procedures resumed after around 6 months.
After 18 months, I'd gained a stone in weight. And a head of new fine hair......

Thinking of you. Hoping all continues to go well.....

Thanks Woodguy

Thanks Dave nice to here from you hope your all keeping well and coping with the lock-down. To be honest I'm quite enjoying the shop time and staying at home, the worst part is missing the family especially the grand kids.

My diagnosis was a real shock to me I'd always enjoyed good robust health it really hit my confidence and my levels of anxiety shot up, I'm far more positive now, just need to get over the next 6 months and my first post treatment tests in September.

As for gaining hair the hormone treatment has made my hair line recede even more you would not have thought that possible for a bald old bugger like me.   :D
