Feeds & Speeds Calculators
« on: February 05, 2016, 03:51:35 PM »
I'm going though my tool libraries in Fusion 360 CAM (you really have to create one for each material type) and unlike some CAD/CAM programs I've used each tool is tied to a specific feed and speed rather than them being modified by you detailing the material you are cutting. (They can be over-ridden when you define the CAM operation)

So I thought that it would be nice to put some science behind what I enter for my Feeds & Speed rather than 'guess and tweak on breakage'  :bugeye:

Hence looking on line for Feeds & Speeds calculators. G wizard is the 'famous' one but it isn't free. FSWizard is free but perhaps a bit clunky. Are there any others I should be looking at. It needs to operate Metric as well as Imperial, and preferably be on my computer rather than on line.

So what are you using, or is it a wet finger in the air

Thanks Tom, but that's the FSWizard that I refer to in my third paragraph

I bit the bullet and bought G-wizard. I've  :zap: broken a couple of tools despite using it (only the expensive carbide ones, so that's OK then ), but on the whole I think I can credit it for keeping my tooling bill somewhere reasonable. I must admit, some of the figures it comes out with seem quite scary on the machine (like - "stand well back, she's gonna blow" scary), but it seems to work.

AIUI, if you buy G-wizard for a certain number of years, you can continue to use it once your paid sub has expired, within certain horsepower limits. e.g. because I bought a 3-year sub, I should be able to continue to use it once it expires, for up to a 6hp machine. I could be wrong on that...
Cheers!
Ade.

Hi Roy/Andrew,

The trouble with a lot of such calculators is that you have to enter "Feed Per Tooth" which seems to be rarely published anywhere.

Well I've been lead badly astray by another member  :bugeye:

Rob Wilson lead me into temptation, let me peep round the curtain concealing desirable objects and I transgressed and bought this little toy :

On the face of it well OTT for my use, but SO convenient, and considering the price of end mills, and also a reasonable Gwizard subscription perhaps not so bad after all.

.... anyway you can't take it with you, and too much inheritance will only spoil the kids

I'm looking forward to seeing how you get on with this over the top maybe, but maybe worthwhile anyway!

I think that more than one of us would be interested in a full report on your findings!

Regards, Matthew

You can also get it as an app for Iphone [ hawk-spit-ding ] or android.

Big big problem with G-Wizard is it needs Adobe Air to run and has to be online. No good to install on a clunker that is plenty good enough to run a CNC and not connected to the net.
Also Adobe is a bigger virus than Norton IMHO. It just wants to take over and slow the machine down.

FS Wizardis also available for free on a phone.

Mine arrived today in Dublin, Ordered on Sunday.

So initial comments:

User manual is not overly clear about some things:

Like How to change from US to Metric! [Conv Prefs select metric with + or - and hit On/C

RTFM! Never better advice! Read the intro to the buttons [page 4 to 15]

Then follow the examples!

All in all very happy with my new toy!

Will I had a online chat to their help desk about setting preferences to metric

When at the preferences screen and it shows as US all you do is press the + key to cycle the preferences to as you want, and they stay set after a power off. It's not in the pamphlet or online guide  :bang:
