Slotting machine
« on: June 08, 2016, 03:11:59 PM »
Hi guys, I've recently acquired an ORMEROD vertical slotting machine, mainly for keyway work. Its a nice machine capable of an 8 inch stroke, all appears to be working, however I'm not familiar at all with slotting or shaping, does anyone know of any knowledge or literature on the subject? Also I'm looking for some replaceable tip tooling, so i don't have to grind up multiple tool steels for various keyway widths - if there is such a thing?

Any light thrown on the subject would be greatly appreciated

Pics to come

Thanks TAB

When I brought my Theil it came with a slotting head.

The head is a bit heavy so trying it out has had to wait. Now that I have  a electric winch mounted on rails above the machine I can now use it

So the question is, other than for keyways... what can you use a slotting head for?

Cutting internal profiles such as hexagons, squares or splines. The possibilities are quite broad......OZ.

Jo, with specialist tooling like that the attitude is often if you need to ask the price you can't afford it and they wouldn't want people randomly collapsing with shock  :bugeye:

I only posted the link to give an example, you could always grind up your own from a quality HSS.....OZ.

Strangely enough I've just made a tool holder for it to reuse some of my 3/16" tool steel :dremel:

Hi TAB and others.
I have a large collection of shaper and slotter files on DropBox. It was collated by members of the AUstralian Metal Working forum http://metalworkforums.com/

Joe,thank you very much for the files, you are an absolute diamond.
I completely rebuilt and re-painted a very shabby Alba 1A shaper for my shop some months back.

I have struggled to get hold of good quality literature on tooling, workholding and other associated disciplines for ages.....Thanks again, much appreciated......OZ.
