Rob, was it new when you got it, or had a previous owner 'breathed' on it ? That lead screw nut implies someone had driven it hard into overtravel  :bugeye:

All those issues have been sorted John  :dremel:

I just have not had time nor the interest in the project ,one day I will get back on with it .

Why not go for a used industrial machine ?

It was a year old when I got it Andrew , and the old bloke sadly died a few months after getting it . The screw nut is as fit from new ,just very poor quality . but at the time they where £1400 new ,so at the end of the day what can one expects for that sort of money .

Well back to reality now ,back from my holidays  :(

So to cheer myself up I went a wee road trip to pick up a few incidentals for the Bridgeport.  :dremel:

Slotting head and HZ quill adaptor , then wile down country I popped into Arceurotrade  for a 6 inch machine vice and a wee bit R8 tooling ,the lad there makes a cracking cup of tea  , then on the way back I swung buy Joules house to drop off the X,Y thing and have  bit crack , his lass also makes a canny brew  :coffee:

Suppose I better put my Boxford shaper and Lathe up for sale ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,groan ,let battle begin

Rob

You should have called in and you could have taken a van load of steel and other stuff with you. Mind you we only serve coffee

Hmmmmm, I had my heart set on a Warco 626 for years, but if I'm going to buy a project....      Might as well be any of the available mills these days.

I am sure there are good versions of the 626 mill out there , did Myford manufacture a variant ?  what is the 626 mill a copy of ?  would be interesting to know its origins .

Luckily converting it to CNC meant I got to throw  out most of the crap parts  :med:

Looks like the 626 is a copy of the Myford VM  http://www.lathes.co.uk/myfordmillers/page2.html

now one of those would sit next to your S7 nicely Joules

I need to be content with the little SU1, with a few mods and some TLC like you have provide to the 626 I'm sure this would be a cracking little desktop knee mill.  It's just crying out for a better vertical head arrangement, either bolted on the overarm as is, or a new block to sit on the column and provide the spindle with a rack and pinion lift, bit like a hybrid Aciera F1

I can but dream

This one is going CNC, so a very different life to a manual machine.

I hope so, plan on teaching him to use a dial gauge so he can measure play in all the ways and get a feel for too loose and too tight, plus it will be an exercise in how things work.  I can see next years Doncaster Show being fun for him.  He should just have enough knowledge by then to be dangerous.

There be one on ebay now http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MYFORD-VM-C-VERTICAL-MILLING-MACHINE-/131941519372?hash=item1eb853d00c:g:Oq0AAOSw4shX3Gs8

Rob

I watched it to the end....it sold at its starting price....
I didnt buy it, 'er-indoors' said" you dont know what you are buying..." Good point...I guess...plus the fact that its 2/3rds the cost of a new machine and I would have had the aggro of collectiing from Wales...

Ah well, I'll keep looking dreaming... :coffee:

Never fails to amaze me how you shoe horn loads into that van and then get them out.

Nice one Rob.

Rob,

Surely there's not enough room for that and a Bridgeport in your Tardis!

Or have some things got to go to make space?

Cheers.

Hi Phil

Yes some machines will be going, the  Boxford shaper ,Boxford  lathe  and maybe a grinder or two  , I sold all the foundry gear earlier in the year and I have allot more reorganisation of the workshop to do , all good fun .

Suppose  I better remove the lathe from the van now  :dremel:
