Hello
« on: January 14, 2017, 01:44:06 PM »
Hello all, just wanted to take a minute to introduce myself.  I'm living in Alberta, Canada and have been lurking on your forum for a little while, drooling over the work that you guys are capable of.  Now that I'm middle aged, I've finally found out what I should've done 20 years ago - take up machining / tool and die making etc.

I've purchased a Seig SC4 and have been learning how to use it.  I am new to the hobby, and so far I've just been practicing some basic operations - turning, facing and an attempt at threading...along with grinding HSS tool bits to the proper shapes.

I've succeeded in making a paperweight but my wife really doesn't understand my great achievement (I thought you guys might).  I think it needs to have a bearing pressed into the other end though, to be a truly useless paperweight.....today's project!

Off the top of my head, I have a couple things I'd like to try like making a tailstock die holder, turning an MT2 taper, building the Clickspring fire piston - and attempting a steady-rest similar to the one made by PowderKeg

Thanks for allowing me to lurk, and learn from you guys.

Rollie

Welcome, You will fit right in with a lot of us paperweight makers. At least that is one use of the bit that just been made.
Nothing is impossible, it just take more time to figure out.

Welcome aboard Rollie

The truth is most of us specialise in making swarf in one form or another, and just occasionally something useful emerges from the chips

Thanks for the kind words guys.  I did get out into the shop yesterday - it was a balmy -3 degrees here in Edmonton.

I'm a little embarrassed to say that the attached picture represents about 8 hours of work.   The paperweight now has a bearing pressed into it.  I'd cut the hole .006" undersized and it was a pretty tight fit.  If I'd been thinking, I would have drilled a hole for a shaft, so that it could mate up with a 2nd potentially useless paperweight.  I was just a bit too excited that I could press the bearing in, and now it's in tight to a flat bottom hole.  Oh well, I'll put "thinking ahead" on the "to-learn" list.

Pack the hole with grease, then put a sliding fit shaft in the i/d of the bearing, and tap the end of the shaft briskly with a hammer. As if by magic the bearing will rise out of the hole.

Hi Rollie, just try whatever you fancy whilst learning, time is never wasted as you make progress by doing.  Nice choice of lathe, I looked at one as a second lathe.   Oh yeah, that will be your next problem, the hoarding of tooling and more machines.  :dremel:
Honour your mentors, and pay it forward.

No Joules , not hoarding, careful and NECESSARY acquiring of ESSENTIAL equipment to ENABLE REPAIRS of things the family have damaged ( SWMBO occasionally questions this but a few strategically pointed out repair jobs ensure future peace! ) :med:

Best tip - given to me by recently deceased uncle- always, on being complimented on a job being nicely done (to SWMBO satisfaction), pick up the most expensive piece of tooling you have near to hand and loudly exclaim " I couldn't have done it without this ...... tool, I don't need it that often but it was ESSENTIAL to do this and I'm glad you like it my dear". :D :D

Worked like a dream for him with all sorts and I've tried it - it works

Welcome to the fascinating world of mad modder. Ian

By the way Andrew left out the fact the now greasy bearing will majestically then disappear under the nearest immovable object having left a trail of grease in it's wake ( just don't ask  :Doh:ok ?)

High and welcome Rollie,
Just a thought, next paper weight that emerges from the swarf, add a magnet to one end and tell SWMBO that it's so she can stick notes on the fridge.
Whatever you do make, enjoy the process, stuff-ups and all cos they are all learning opportunities. I obviously learn a lot - or is that - make lots of stuff-ups.

The only trouble with the magnet idea, is the placement.....for some odd reason it always seems to end up covering the mother-in-law's head as it holds up the family picture   :D

That's just wishful thinking on your part. Best not let SWMBO see your post. Bad Karma might ensue.
