Water pump build or motorway to the scrapyard
« on: July 22, 2017, 09:32:04 AM »

Failure to aquire a readybuilt running steam powered water pump has driven me too this. i have had these castings for quite a while and after discussions with my machining teacher it was decided that this project was above my pay grade so they have been in a box ever since.

now needs must if i cant buy one i'll have to just try and make one these didn't cost much as a second hand purchase all i have to lose is time.

So as can be seen a start has been made squaring both ends of both cylinder castings.

Next job clean and open out the cylinder's in the steam casting to .500" true size is .650 but i want to transfer punch some centre marks onto the water side casting and 1/2 inch punch is the biggest i have.
watch this space as the saga unfolds.

Hi there, David,

That looks like a juicy set of castings, a worthy project indeed.

If it were me, I'd erect a large sign over my bench saying 'Measure twice - cut once'!  (I'd need it, your mileage may differ.)

Have you told us elsewhere what workshop facilities you have?
Best regards,

Pete W.

If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs, you haven't seen the latest design change-note!

Go for it David you won't learn anything by not trying. Every project runs the risk of failure but you learn something everytime. I'm still very much a beginner but I still strive for maximum  accuracy on everything I make even when not required because it's the learning that counts.

Good luck
