Cleaning drawn steel ...how?
« on: August 03, 2017, 04:45:37 AM »
For some time I've been marking out using copper sulphate solution with good results, except on newly purchased drawn steel.

The problem is getting the surface of the steel truly clean, that is, water break free. What can the amateur do to entirely remove the surface contamination? Degreasing in petrol doesn't work, the oils are removed but the surface still water breaks making the copper deposit very patchy and non adherent. Even following up with a detergent doesn't help much.

Thanks in advance.

Petrol followed by IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol)? I believe IPA is a degreaser.
Cheers!

Or use a solvent based marking fluid that won't mind a slightly oily surface.

Hammerite thinners works well as a cleaner. But panel thinners or panel wipe I think it's called also works.

Not sure how this will work for your purposes, but I was told by a 3M engineer (when discussing specialty tape adhesion) that isopropyl alcohol is the best final cleaner for surfaces. He said that even things like acetone will leave a residue.
