multiprinter
« on: September 22, 2017, 04:56:10 PM »
I decided it was time I got into this 3d printing lark but I also want a laser marker for another project I have in mind so I have decided to try and make a machine that can hopefully fulfill both of those and MAYBE even be capable of mounting a high speed router spindle too.
For the project I have in mind for the laser will require long planks fit on the machine so I took to sketchup to give me an idea of what i need.

So I aquired a cnc shield kit, some nema 17 motors and some 12mm linear bearings and made a pattern to cast the block for the Y and Z axis.
Powered up my furnace and made the casting which shrunk a little in one spot but I decided I could get away with it.
So I am currently up to the stage where I have the bearings fitted (temporarily) and it all seems to be going well.

Spent the day on the mill making the Z axis screw fit in place. its a salvage from a recliner chair that someone at work was throwing away but I will change the worm gear at the top for a gt2 pulley.

After a bit of help from grandson  got the Y/Z axis sorted properly with the linear bearings properly spaced.
So next bit was the casting for the bottom carriage which required various operations to fit bearings and it runs pretty nicely as it is.
I know in the sketchup drawing above I drew it with round bars and I may go back to that but I thought I would try this cheaper way first.

It is quite big but that wont be for the printing its for the laser marking, it should be able to mark about 850mm by 300mm. The printing will be on a 300mm square heated plate.

Its been really slow going due to waiting for parts and went to dentist to have a tooth out and ended up with a infection that made my top lip swell up and made me feel like death warmed up for a while. I suspect the dentist cut my lip with the tools as she didnt seem to be paying too much attention to what she was doing.
Anyway feeling better now and have pretty much got the Z axis all sorted. It has a 3:1 ratio on a M10 thread so should give me .5mm per turn of the motor. Need to start working on getting the Y axis sorted now which means more parts.

Looking promising!

I built a monster printer a while ago: 15" cube print volume.  The KEY thing for big prints:  get a volcano nozzle!  I run a 1.2mm nozzle.  Yes, that's only a little smaller than the 1.75mm filament...  When you want to make BIG parts, there's not substitute for massive volume!

Sneaky slicer trick:  do the infill every two or three layers.  This makes the surfaces look a lot better and doesn't slow it down TOOOO much.
