Board track racer
« on: November 27, 2017, 09:03:44 PM »
I am going to build a vintage board track racer with the v twin engine that I built on a thread here about two years ago. Here is a picture to jog your memory.

To build this bike without plans I need to start with the engine and a set of wheels. I have the engine so  what to do about the wheel. I could buy some but I can't find some I like.  I built some for the last bike but they had no drop center and it was tough installing the tires so I have decided to try to make some dies and try to form a drop center in a piece of 2-1/2-1/8 Chanel and then roll it to the radius I need. After making three sets of dies I Finally made some that I think will work. Here are some pictures of the process

Mark I like to make all the parts that I can. Its not practical and definitely pushes my limits .
Here are some pictures of the spokes, hub, rim,and die I used to forge the head on the spokes.
I am still having a little trouble with the photo size thing some moderators please delete the over size ones thanks.

Do you use a hydraulic press to forge the spoke heads onto the die?

Harder to explain than the concept is... Oval track, built from boards (wood, aka "brown stuff"). Follow the link; http://flashbackfab.com/excelsior-homepage/
This is one heck of a build!

Mark the die is split so that when a spoke is in it and put in a vice it squeezes on the spoke and holds it firm then the end of the spoke is heated and forged in to the die see picture.

I have have been working on truing the wheels . I got the front one done and mounted the tire. they are Avon Speedmaster 3.00-21

Interesting so are the spokes tapped into the hub or do you insert nipples through the hub?

Osselton yes the hub is threaded.

The flashbackfab bikes are a very good example of a board track racer and thanks for posting the link but that is not what you are going to see in this post what I am building will have some similarities to a board track racer but is not a replica of a original. I enjoy building engines and the bike is basically a display stand for my engine all though it should be rideable it will be ridden very little
Here is a picture of the rear hub and sprocket blank

Tom it's a grease cup to lube the wheel bearings. It's for looks but could be used if I took the inner seals out of the wheel bearings.

Coming along good! Are you sure you don't want to turn the front end into a girder front end?

Osselton I like the way the ridgid front end looks but I may change it in the future. There is so many parts that still need to be made I don't want to remake the  already made ones yet.
I have been working on the handle bars and final drive here is a picture.
