Tormach Tooling System
« on: September 17, 2019, 11:11:09 AM »
Having been snared into watch all 24 parts of Clough42's videos:

https://madmodder.net/index.php/topic,12967.msg155331.html#msg155331  :jaw:

I have become interested in his use of Tormach tool holder in his R8 spindle.

Has anyone here bought stuff from Tormach, used their TTS or any comments or pifalls.

This system along with a half decent CNC controller makes tool changing pretty simple and accurate, but NOT CHEAP

Btw: What are the European equivalents of the Tormach mills i.e in the price range of 5k to 15k ish?

Cheers
for now

There are a few Chinesium TTS clones about now. I don't use the TTS system myself but this guy in Bristol has started importing them https://emvioeng.com/product-category/machine-tools/.

Searching for "3/4 straight shank tool holder" found this on Alibaba https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/New-3-4-ER20-1-38_1218486868.html?spm=a2700.7724857.normalList.1.76205318sb2vGI but there may be others.

My understanding is that this TTS system is used if your mill has R8 AND you want to CNC. ISO30 would be nice, but if it is not in the cards then this TTS will allow relatively constant Z-location for the tool tips.

Tormach mill might have a niche market, but it really comes as expensive as real mills in the end.

Theere are some happy people with it

Search this site for "Tormach":
https://www.model-engineer.co.uk

I read this:
https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=143115

You may want to see this:

V.S. sponcered Tormach:

All up price of Haas or such actually comes close, this shows size:

Office Mill, OM-1 or OM-2 (small, single phase) or Robodrill were something I consider few years ago buying used. Some office mills seemed to have gone trough very little use. Some Robodrills were run to destruction with drill/tapping. Even robodrill can mill whole lot more than Tormach.

Tool change, rapids, feeds and usually the come with coolant system, might be worh noting:

I don't have any of those, but seen office mills and robodrills live. Also talked to people that have used Tormach or their imediate friends have them. Consensus seem to be that to buy Tormach you really have to have serious weight limitation and power feed limitation and low needs for capacity, accuracy and resale value. Then again, there are very few affordable options on that ecological niece. I never went to CNC and happy that way.

Thanks Pekka, yes I have heard about some of Tormachs' problems. I am still upgrading my SiegSX2 Plus with the new DDCNC controller [3.1]. Its the ability to change tools repeatably that appeals.

After all there are no pockets in shrouds

Well its been a while but I am starting to investigate tool changing on my Sieg SX2+. Controller is the DDCSC3.1 running the latest software 2019-10-10-112.

I intend to use the Tormach TTS system (or a copy!), and No I will not be buying a Tormach!
This should allow me to accurately remount tools into the spindle

I am finding things VERY confusing. I am running this code:

T2 is 21.32 mm shorter than T1 but I have to set T2 to -41.32 in order to come down to workpiece Z0

N010 G17 G21 G49 G54 G90

(Set #267 = 0)
(Set #268 = 40 T1)
(Set #269 = -41.32 T2)
(Set #270 = 25 T3)
(Set #271 = 30 T4)

(Establish X,Y,Z with tool 1)
(Top of workpiece is Z0)

N020 G00 X0.0 Y0.0 Z0.0

    F 250
    M03
    S 1000

N030 G00 Z20

N050 T2 (is shorter than T1)

N060 M06 G43 Z0.0 H2 (4mm short end mill)
(Tool lowers by 41.32mm to workpiece Z0)

N080 G01 X10.0
N090 G01 X0.0

    M00 (Pause b4 G49)

N100 G49

N110 M00 (Pause T2)

N120 G00 X0 Y0 Z0

M30
%

That works but if I change N030 to Z30 the mill would drive 10 mm into the workpiece.
Luckily just cutting air at the moment.

Any thoughts guys?

Cheers
