Hi from Bolton UK.
« on: August 15, 2018, 12:21:22 PM »
Hi I'm John from the sunny North West of England. My main area of interest is cnc machining and cnc machine refurbishment and repair. I'm always looking to learn so that is how I came to this forum. Some really clever people on here doing great things.
I hope to have some of my own projects on the forum in the near future.

Hi John!

I'm just down the road in Sunny Manchester at the moment - although I live on the Wirral (much sunnier...)

If you fancy a challenge.... I've got a Mazak Quickslant 20 which needs a good dose of refurbishing... I keep trying to persuade Andrew to leave his comfortable workshop behind & give me a hand, but he seems to be too busy every time I call him   So if you fancy a challenge.... just say the word :) There's   in it... (well, not actually in it, that'd be too easy!)
Cheers!
Ade.

Hi John - well, I'll keep dropping hints, one day someone will get fed up & will come help me out just to shut me up!

Andrew - TBH, watching (with interest) your Beaver restoration, I'm wondering if it'd be easier to rip all of the old electronics/electrics out & replace them with new... Either that, or I need to win the lottery big, so I can retire & spend all of my newly created spare time working on the damn thing...
Cheers!
Ade.

Ade, I have no knowledge of the Quickturn controller, but don't under estimate the complexities of replacing it. Entirely possible of course but the shear volume of inputs and outputs on a complex CNC lathe is quite a challenge to deal with in an orderly fashion in the timescale that machining demands.
Remember that the first version of your lathe probably took a team of half a dozen several months implementing and integrating the control with the lathe, and they almost certainly had already 'done it before' on earlier models.

The huge advantage of replacing the controller is of course that everything is under your control with no issues of lack of information from long gone suppliers.

Example: if I had a paper copy of the ladder logic of the PLC on the Beaver, I'm certain I'd have found the issue with spindle orientation by now.

Yes Ade definitely keep the control original..there is always someone out there who has the information needed get it working again.

Mazak will probably have 100's of software and electrical engineers working on their controls..no disrespect to Mach as it's been great for a lot of retro fits but it's a few guys writing the software in their spare time backed up by forum members flagging up bugs when a new update comes out..not to mention the cost of all new cabling for the new expensive servos and drives you would have to buy because the old ones are specific to the Mazak control etc etc   :jaw:
