Making stainless steel look like pewter?
« on: November 29, 2018, 02:34:22 PM »
Hi folks,

I have some high-polish stainless steel exterior door handles which need to be made to look like pewter (ie a dull, almost lead-like finish with some 'divots' and imperfections).

The handles are a solid stainless high security item, but the look must be pewter, and the only available actual pewter alternatives are not strong enough.

Any idea how to go about doing this?

I'm thinking either an acid dip, or heating, or both. I might combine with shot blasting or maybe roughing the texture up using a needle descaler. Would appreciate any tips though.

As the handles are quite expensive I don't want to experiment too much - hoping to get it right in one go!

Thanks,
Rich

Hi Rich,

Put the handles on a rumbler (tumbler for the @mericans). I think the medium to course media will give the dull effect that you are looking for.
