Laser / IR thermometer.
« on: October 15, 2018, 08:37:06 PM »
Would anyone care to recommend one of the above?

I need to measure underfloor heating output, measure slate and concrete tile roof temperatures (at about 10m from the tool) and

to measure ground temps for gaerdening purposes (for SWMBO).

I would also like to check my lead furnace temp.

I got a $39.95 Harbor Freight special laser guided IR temperature probe.  It'll do everything you want to do, except the last thing you want to do.  The temperature is within it's range, but it absolutely hates shiny surfaces.

I can't get even a decent temperature reading off the extruder heater block for my 3D printer.  It's less than 250° C but it's nice shiny aluminum.  I can get a read off the aluminum print bed, but only where I've got it covered with blue painter's tape.

For your lead furnace you'd be better off building a pyrometer.  There's several ideas here:

Hope this helps,

Use some matt black paint to coat a small area where you want to measure. BBQ paint is recommended by manufacturers of IR thermal measurement equipment and it won't generally burn off(!).

10m range is pushing it for those cheap IR thermometers....
